Laundry & Ironing for Trowell homes

The line is the competition. Big plots and an exposed position mean washing dries outdoors from April to September, so what sells in summer is ironing on its own and the full service wash starts again in late October.

Demand here splits by season far more sharply than it does anywhere with small gardens. These are plots with room for a full line and an exposed position that dries it, so from spring to early autumn the washing goes out and comes in the same afternoon and nobody needs the wet stage doing for them. What people buy in those months is ironing on its own, mostly shirts and school uniform, because that is the part the weather does not help with. From late October it inverts. The line stops working, the drying moves indoors into a house that is empty and cold all day, and the service wash becomes the thing worth paying for. It is better set up as two arrangements across the year than one that half suits both halves of it.

Trowell sits in NG9, under Broxtowe Borough Council. The local reference points are St Helen's Church, the M1 services and the old Nottingham Canal nature reserve, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Trowell laundry & ironing jobs

Pockets and seams are where a village wash differs from a town one. Outdoor clothing comes in with grass seed, burrs and cleavers worked into the seams and the pocket linings, and walking a dog along the old canal brings mud that has dried into the weave rather than sitting on top of it. None of that dissolves. Put it straight into a machine and the seed works out of the fabric, through the filter and into the next load, which is how somebody else's washing ends up with bits in it. So outdoor kit is shaken out and pockets emptied before it goes near a drum, and it runs on its own.

How a Trowell laundry & ironing job actually runs

Collection here is a fixed slot rather than a choice, because the village is a single run and the van does it in one pass. You get a day and a window on that day, and the same window coming back, and it works better than it sounds once it is set, since the point of buying this service is not having to think about it. Almost nobody is in when we call, so the arrangement has to survive an empty house: an agreed porch, an unlocked outbuilding, a neighbour who is expecting us, something settled once rather than negotiated weekly. The bag wants to be out of the weather and visible from the door, because a bag we have to hunt for costs the whole round its timing. The count sheet goes in the bag both ways, and that is the part worth taking seriously, since the entire procedure rests on a bag counted at the door and counted back. Two more things. Say what must not go in with the rest before the bag leaves. And tell us if anyone in the house works outdoors, because heavily soiled workwear is not something a domestic laundry takes.

Who books it here

Fortnightly domestic rounds carry the week, in houses where both adults drive out of the village to work and the housework has been compressed into Saturday. Deep cleans cluster in April, once the wet half of the year has finished putting soil through the house. Window cleaning is the third string and the demand for it is openly seasonal.

We run Trowell on the same round as Stapleford, Kimberley and Nuthall.

What we check on every Trowell job

What people ring about in July is not stains. It is washing coming off the line covered in tiny black insects, which arrive in numbers for a few days after the fields are cut and get into the folds of anything pale hanging outside. They are not so much on the fabric as in it, and shaking a sheet moves them along rather than off. A tumble dryer clears them where a rinse does not, because they come out through the lint filter, and that is one of the few honest arguments for sending the drying out in a month when the line is otherwise perfect. The other one is rain. A line load taken in slightly damp and folded straight into an airing cupboard sours within a day, and the smell sits in the folded creases rather than through the whole sheet. Once washing has been through that it needs rewashing rather than airing, and it is better said at collection than discovered at return.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Service wash, charged by weight: Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
  • Ironing: Steam on the reverse of anything that shines, and a pressing cloth on wool
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
  • Ironing: Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What laundry & ironing costs in Trowell

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Trowell. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

We line dry all summer. Is a service wash worth anything in July?

Probably not, and we would rather say so than take the booking. In a summer month, with a line and a plot like these, the wet stage is the part the weather does for you. What is still worth buying is the ironing, because that is the same work in any month and shirts and school uniform are where the hours actually go. Then move to the full service from late October, when the drying has to come indoors.

My partner works outdoors. Can their work clothes go in?

It depends what is on them. Ordinary mud, grass and dust are fine, and they run separately from the household washing, which is most of the reason for sending them out at all. What we cannot take is anything carrying oil, solvent, paint or biological contamination, because that needs a process which is not a domestic one and it contaminates everything after it in the drum. If you are not sure, bag it on its own and tell us what it has been near.

Nobody is in when the van comes. Where do we leave the bag?

Somewhere agreed once and then left alone: a porch, an unlocked store, a neighbour who knows to expect it. It wants to be out of the weather and visible from the door, because a bag we have to go looking for costs the rest of the round its timing. The count sheet travels in the bag with it and the same sheet is counted back on return, which is what makes a missing item traceable to a load and a date rather than a matter of opinion.

It came back smelling fine and then went musty in the cupboard. Why?

Because it went away not quite dry, and folded fabric holds that in the creases. It happens most with bedding and towels, and it happens more in a house that is unheated all day, because an airing cupboard in a cold empty house is not doing what its name suggests. Anything that has soured wants rewashing rather than airing out. If it keeps happening, tell us and we will dry to a lower moisture rather than assuming the cupboard will finish the job.

Do you cover the whole of Trowell?

Yes, all of NG9 and the surrounding streets, under Broxtowe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Trowell?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Trowell?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Off street space at nearly every house, so parking is rarely the problem, and we group Trowell with Stapleford, Kimberley and Nuthall on the rota.
