Laundry & Ironing for Toton homes
Family households with school uniform and a full week of bedding, not linen contracts. The porch added onto the original front elevation does the handover: a bag left inside its outer door stays dry and out of sight when nobody is home.
Who buys this here is a household rather than a business. There is very little let stock on these estates and no linen contracts to speak of, so what goes on the van is family washing: school uniform and sports kit through term time, workwear somebody wants kept well away from everything else, and a great deal of bedding and towelling out of a three or four bedroom house. That last part is what people misjudge when they ask about turnaround. A bag of shirts is light and slow, a bag of bath towels is heavy and quick, and a full house stripping its beds on a Sunday produces the second kind. Weight rather than item count is what decides whether a collection comes back the next day.
Toton sits in NG9, under Broxtowe Borough Council. The local reference points are Toton Sidings, Toton Fields Nature Reserve, Swiney Way and the Bardills roundabout on the A52, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Toton laundry & ironing jobs
The reason these bags exist is usually visible in the hall. In a house of this age with no utility room, the machine went under the kitchen worktop during the refit, and a vented dryer hose has nowhere to go except out of a window propped open on a book. Most households gave that up, so the wet stage ends on an airer in the lounge or on the landing, and a full load of bedding drying in a closed house in January puts several litres of water into the room. That is why the windows run on a cold morning and the heating never feels like enough. Sending the bulky items out is the cheapest thing that helps.
How a Toton laundry & ironing job actually runs
Almost nobody here is in when the van comes past, which is the whole design problem with a collection round. The answer on these houses is the porch. A good number have an enclosed porch built onto the front, with an outer door that is not locked during the day and an inner door that is, and a bag standing inside it is dry, out of the weather and not visible from the pavement. Where there is no porch, a nominated spot behind the side gate works and a bag left on an open step does not, because a sack of clean laundry sitting out in a Nottingham October is a wasted round for both of us. The count sheet goes into the bag rather than being handed over, with a copy kept here, so nothing depends on anybody being there to sign for it. Returns work the same way and go inside rather than onto a step. The slot itself is fixed to the street rather than to the household, which is what keeps it affordable, so a collection is a morning or an afternoon on a named day rather than a time you have to wait in for.
Who books it here
Regular fortnightly cleans in owner-occupied family houses make up the base, and post-construction work is the second string: rear extensions, garages taken into the house, and full kitchen and bathroom replacements. Deep cleans follow those, usually booked once the building work is finished and the household notices the rest of the house went untouched for months.
We run Toton on the same round as Chilwell, Attenborough and Stapleford.
What we check on every Toton job
School uniform is where the ironing goes wrong in most households, and it is worth explaining because half of the bags on this round contain it. Uniform trousers and skirts are polyester or a polyester cotton blend, and polyester does not crease the way cotton does. It melts, very slightly, under a hot iron, and the result is a shine across the seat, the knee and anywhere the fabric had already been pressed flat by wear. Once that shine is there it is a change in the fibre surface and no wash will take it out. The answer is the synthetic setting, steam instead of pressure, and the iron worked on the reverse of the garment with a cloth over anything already showing it. Blazers do not meet an iron at all and are steamed with the plate held off the surface. Cotton shirts want the opposite treatment entirely, which is why a mixed bag gets sorted at the board rather than worked through in the order it comes out.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Service wash, charged by weight: Bags weighed at collection, with the weight and the price confirmed before anything is washed
- Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
- Ironing: Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
- Ironing: Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Toton
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Toton. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
We already own a washing machine. What are we actually paying for?
Drying and pressing, mostly, which are the two stages a house this size struggles with between October and March. Washing is the cheap part, because the machine does it without anybody standing over it. What costs you is a load of bedding on an airer for two days in a heated room and what that does to the air in the house. Plenty of households here send out the bedding, the towels and the ironing and keep the everyday washing themselves.
Can school uniform come back on the same day every week?
That is the arrangement that works best, and it wants setting up at the start of a term rather than in the week it turns urgent. The round covers the same streets on the same day, so a fixed slot means the bag goes whether anybody remembered to arrange it or not. Tell us which items are needed back first if a week is tight, because a shirt is slow work and a towel is quick regardless of what the two of them weigh.
Nobody is home during the day. Where does the bag go?
Inside the porch if you have one, or a spot behind the side gate that we agree at the first collection. What does not work is an open front step, because a sack of clean laundry left out in the rain is a wasted round for both of us and there is nothing to be done about it afterwards. The count sheet goes in the bag with a copy kept here, so the handover never depends on somebody being in to check it off.
Can you take the duvets and the pillows as well?
Singles and pillows sometimes, and it depends on the filling and on whether the item can genuinely move inside a drum. Doubles, kings and anything filled with feather go to a launderette or a commercial laundry, and we say so at the door rather than take the money. A duvet that cannot tumble freely never gets properly wet and never gets properly dry, which is exactly how one comes back smelling worse than it went out.
Do you cover the whole of Toton?
Yes, all of NG9 and the surrounding streets, under Broxtowe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Toton?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Toton?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Most houses have a drive or hardstanding at the front, so parking is rarely a problem, and we group Toton with Chilwell, Attenborough and Stapleford on the rota.
