Laundry & Ironing for Sandiacre homes

Two patterns buy this here: school uniform through term time, and workwear that has to stay out of the household machine and come back on the same day every week. Both need a genuinely fixed slot rather than a phone call.

Two households buy this and they want opposite things from it. The first is a family running school uniform through term time, and with Friesland School in the town a large share of that washing sits on the same weekly cycle as everybody else's, which is why the slot has to be genuinely fixed rather than arranged afresh each week. The second is somebody working a shift pattern who wants workwear kept out of the household machine altogether, and for them the day it comes back matters more than anything else about the service. Neither of those is a bag of shirts. Both are predictable, which is what makes a round work at all, and both are wrecked by a collection that slips a day.

Sandiacre sits in NG10, under Erewash Borough Council. The local reference points are St Giles' church on the hill, Sandiacre Lock and the canal towpath, Springfield Mill, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Sandiacre laundry & ironing jobs

The front doors on this stock fall into two types and the bag tells you which one you have. The interwar semis have a recessed porch deep enough to hold a full bag out of the rain and out of view, which is why nearly every doorstep handover in the town happens at one of those. The later estate houses mostly have a flush door under a small canopy that covers the lock and very little else, so a bag left there sits in the open, gets rained on down one side and is visible from the road. On those we either collect from a side door behind the gate or fix a time when somebody is in.

How a Sandiacre laundry & ironing job actually runs

The round works by street rather than by appointment, so a collection day is fixed once and then left alone. Bin day is what most often breaks it. On the narrower streets the wheeled bins are out on the pavement from the night before and there is less kerb for a van than usual, so those streets are set for a different day rather than fought over, and it is worth telling us which day yours falls on. On the estate roads with drives it makes no difference. Returns need more thought than collections do, because ironing comes back on hangers under a cover and wants somewhere to hang immediately rather than being laid across the back of a chair. A door frame, a picture rail or the newel post at the foot of the stairs all work; a hook agreed beforehand works better. Anything that has to be back for a particular morning needs saying at collection instead of being assumed, since a busy round runs in the order it was taken in. Turnaround is drying rather than washing, which is why eight kilos of towels will never be a same day job.

Who books it here

Fortnightly domestic rounds across the estates on the low ground are the base of it. Check out cleans come second and run to the motorway rather than to the school year, because much of the let stock is taken by people working somewhere else. Deep cleans arrive in two waves, before Christmas and once the fog season ends.

We run Sandiacre on the same round as Stapleford, Long Eaton and Toton.

What we check on every Sandiacre job

Uniform arrives damaged more often than anything else in a bag, and it is nearly always the printed crest. School polo shirts and sweatshirts carry a heat applied transfer on the chest, and an iron put straight onto one softens it, prints the weave of the shirt into it and lifts the edges, after which it peels a little further with every wash. Once that has started, nothing brings it back. The same garments are usually polyester or a polyester and cotton mix, which shines permanently under a hot plate, and the shine shows worst across the shoulders and on the collar points where the fabric is doubled over. So they are pressed on the reverse with steam and a cloth, well below the temperature a cotton shirt takes, and the crest is worked around rather than over. Anything already lifting is pointed out and written onto the count sheet at collection, because it will look worse afterwards whoever handles it.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Ironing: Bed linen and duvet covers, slow work and priced separately from clothes
  • Service wash, charged by weight: An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Non-bio and fragrance-free detergent on request, at no extra cost
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Bags weighed at collection, with the weight and the price confirmed before anything is washed

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What laundry & ironing costs in Sandiacre

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Sandiacre. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32
Collection and return, per orderFree to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Laundry & Ironingin Sandiacre

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Nobody is in when the van comes round. Where should the bag go?

Somewhere covered and out of view from the road, which on most of these houses means inside a porch or behind the side gate rather than under a door canopy. Agree the spot once and it stays the spot. The count sheet goes into the bag and is photographed at the door, so the record exists whether we meet or not, and the return comes back to the same place. If neither works, a neighbour or a fixed evening slot is better than guessing.

Can school uniform and workwear go in the same bag?

They can be collected together and they will not be washed together. Workwear is the reason most people send laundry out in the first place, so it is kept apart from household items and run hot on its own. Uniform goes on the label temperature, which for most of it is lower than people assume, since polyester shirts and knitwear are what shrink and shine. Put a note in the bag saying what you need back first and we work to that.

The crest on our school jumpers is peeling. Was that caused by ironing?

Very possibly, and it is the most common damage we see on uniform. A heat applied transfer softens under an iron, takes on the texture of the fabric underneath and lifts at its edges, and from then on it peels a bit more in every wash. A hot tumble dryer does the same thing more slowly. Once it has started it cannot be repaired, so the answer is prevention: press on the reverse, keep the plate off the print, and wash inside out at the label temperature rather than hotter.

Is it cheaper to have the ironing done here or collected and sent out?

They are priced on different units, so it depends what you actually have. Ironing done in your home during a cleaning visit is charged by the hour and makes sense when it is an hour's worth alongside other work. Collected, it is priced by the item or by the hour, whichever suits the bag, and that suits a steady weekly volume better. What never compares is a weight price for washing against an item price for ironing, since a bag of shirts weighs almost nothing and takes the longest.

Do you cover the whole of Sandiacre?

Yes, all of NG10 and the surrounding streets, under Erewash Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Sandiacre?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Sandiacre?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Hill streets are narrow and parked solid by early evening, so those visits are booked for the middle of the day, and we group Sandiacre with Stapleford, Long Eaton and Toton on the rota.
