Laundry & Ironing for Lenton Abbey homes

Two buyers on one street: households who have stopped managing a full basket down the garden, and shared lets queueing for one machine in a small back kitchen. Winter is the season, because indoor drying is what wets these houses.

Two households on the same street buy this for opposite reasons. In the settled half it is usually somebody who has stopped being able to carry a full basket down the garden to the line, or one person running one small load a week in a machine older than the kitchen it stands in. In the lets it is four adults sharing a single machine in a small back kitchen, where the queue is the problem rather than the washing. Behind both sits a third and smaller demand: counted bed linen for the whole houses let short term to visiting academics and families, which is stock on a rotation rather than a household's washing, and it gets handled that way.

Lenton Abbey sits in NG9, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are Derby Road, the university campus boundary along one side and Beeston immediately west, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Lenton Abbey laundry & ironing jobs

Winter is when this stops being a convenience here. A single load carries a couple of litres of water into the house with it, and dried on an airer in the front room or over the one radiator that is on, every drop of that ends up in the air of a small house with one opening window per room and nothing mechanical shifting it. It comes back out on the coldest surface in the building, which is why the same corner of the same bedroom gets cleaned every February. Sending the wet months out is worth as much for what it keeps out of the house as for the hours it saves.

How a Lenton Abbey laundry & ironing job actually runs

Collection here runs on a fixed weekday rather than on request, which is what makes it workable on a street where a van cannot sit about. A whole side of the estate goes on one run, so the stop at your door lasts minutes: bag handed over, weighed there, count sheet signed, and the return lands on a set day later in the week. Two practical things follow from the houses themselves. There is no porch and no shelter at these front doors, so anything coming back on hangers is covered and handed over rather than hooked outside to wait, and where nobody will be in we would far rather it went inside through a key safe than sat on an open path in full view of the street. And because a service wash is charged by weight, what goes into the bag wants to be dry. A damp towel dropped in the day before is weight you are paying us to carry, and inside a closed bag it will have made everything around it smell by the time the bag is opened.

Who books it here

End of tenancy work leads, and it spreads through the year rather than landing in one summer fortnight, because the lets here are whole houses on twelve month agreements to postgraduates and staff. Around that sit fortnightly visits for settled households, and deep cleans booked before a relet or when a house finally gets its first.

We run Lenton Abbey on the same round as Beeston, Dunkirk and Wollaton Park.

What we check on every Lenton Abbey job

Towels tell us how a house has been washing. The ones that come out of these small kitchens have usually been run cool in a drum that was packed full, so the load never had room to move and the rinse never cleared, and detergent and conditioner have built up through the pile. A towel like that goes stiff, stops absorbing and smells the moment it gets damp, which reads as a laundry problem and is really a rinsing one. It comes back over two or three washes: hot, no conditioner, an extra rinse and a load that is not stuffed in. Bed linen from the same house shows the same thing differently, as a dull grey in the whites that more detergent will not shift because detergent is what caused it. We say which of the two we are dealing with rather than handing back a bag that looks much like the one you gave us.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Service wash, charged by weight: Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
  • Ironing: Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
  • Linen, towels and household items: Duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases washed and either pressed or folded flat

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Lenton Abbey property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What laundry & ironing costs in Lenton Abbey

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Lenton Abbey. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32
Collection and return, per orderFree to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

There is nowhere to park on our street in term time. How does collection work?

By fixed window rather than an all day wait. We agree a weekday and a time, the bag is weighed at the door and the count sheet is signed there, so the stop lasts minutes on a street with no room for a van to sit. Where nobody is in, a key safe does the same job it does for a clean. Avoid the morning your bins go out, because the pavement is unusable then.

It is a shared house. Can four people's washing be kept apart?

Yes, and it has to be, or the arrangement collapses in the second week. Each person gets their own bag and their own count sheet, and it comes back folded and bagged exactly as it went out. What we need from a shared house is one named person to hand over and receive, because a collection where four people each assume somebody else is in is the thing that fails on a street with no parking.

Can the duvet go in with the rest?

That depends on the size and the filling, and we would rather say no at the door than ruin one. Singles and standard doubles with a synthetic filling are usually fine. King and super king will not wash properly in the drums we use, and feather or down of any size needs a launderer with a machine big enough to let it move about, or the filling clumps and never recovers. Pillows we look at one at a time and say honestly.

Half of it has no label left in it.

Then it stays in the bag and comes back untouched, unless you tell us in writing to treat it at our discretion and accept the risk. No label means no fibre, no temperature and no cleaning symbol, and the items that have lost theirs are usually the older ones that shrink or lose their shape. Point out anything you already know is wool or silk when you hand the bag over, along with anything with a broken zip or a loose button, which we set aside.

Do you cover the whole of Lenton Abbey?

Yes, all of NG9 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Lenton Abbey?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Lenton Abbey?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Bought houses have hardstanding across the front garden; the rest have none, so the kerb fills in term time and the street narrows to one lane, and we group Lenton Abbey with Beeston, Dunkirk and Wollaton Park on the rota.
