Oven Cleaning for St Ann's homes

Kitchens here are narrow and at the back, and where the heating is night storage the cooker is electric and wired to a cooker point rather than plugged in. That decides how far it comes out and what we can reach behind it.

The cooker in most of these kitchens is freestanding rather than built in, standing in a gap left for it in the unit run at the rear of the house. Where the heating is night storage the cooker is electric too, wired to a cooker point on the wall rather than plugged into a socket, and that is the first thing we establish. A wired appliance comes forward as far as its cable allows and no further, which is enough to reach the sides and the floor beneath but not enough to turn it round. These kitchens are narrow, often with the back door opening off them, so there is nowhere obvious to stand a hot rack. Floor and worktop get covered before the first panel comes off.

St Ann's sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly 1970s redevelopment housing in low brick terraces and cul-de-sacs, with garage courts and walkways between them, plus older Victorian terraces surviving along the hill's upper edges and around the allotment boundary, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on St Ann's oven cleaning jobs

Cookers of the age this stock runs to often have solid electric plates rather than a ceramic top: heavy cast discs set into the panel, each sitting in a sealing ring. They must not be soaked. Water that gets under the ring rusts the plate, and the rust then bleeds back out every time it heats, so those are cleaned damp, dried immediately and given the thinnest smear of oil. The other place worth knowing about is the gap either side of a freestanding cooker, a couple of centimetres of bare unit carcass on both sides, which fills with fat and crumbs and is usually what a kitchen is smelling when the oven is on.

How a St Ann's oven cleaning job actually runs

An oven clean here is planned around one walk. Our van sits in the parking court behind, the door is on the footpath at the front, and the heated tank the racks and trays soak in stays out there with it. So the removable parts leave the house, go along the walkway and come back the same way, which is fine once and not fine four times, and it is why everything comes out of the appliance in one go rather than as we get to it. Say at the booking stage which side your door faces and whether a bollard sits on the route, because the difference between a short carry and a long one is real time on the job. In an occupied house the kitchen is out of use while the cavity is dwelling, and in these layouts the kitchen is also the way through to the yard, so it is worth knowing that before the morning starts. In a let, whoever holds the key needs confirming before the date rather than on it.

Who books it here

On the practical side: Much of the estate separates cars from front doors: parking sits in courts and rear bays while the house opens onto a footpath. Tell us which side your door faces and whether a bollard blocks the route, and we plan the carry in.

We run St Ann's on the same round as Sneinton, Mapperley and Nottingham City Centre.

What we check on every St Ann's job

Before anything is applied we establish whether the appliance is plugged or wired, whether the liners on the side walls are the rough matte catalytic kind, and whether the inner door pane on that model is designed to come out. Chipped enamel, a crazed pane, a perished seal and a bulb that has already blown are photographed and shown to you first. Then the cooker comes forward on its cable, and the two exposed edges of unit carcass either side get done along with the floor strip underneath, which on a freestanding appliance has no plinth over it and has not been seen in years. Racks, runners, grill pan and storage drawer all come out together. Rinsing is repeated until the cloth comes back clean, because caustic left in a corner smokes the first time somebody uses it, and in a let that reads as a job not finished.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • How the job is left: Freestanding cookers pulled out where safe, so the sides and the gap are done
  • The oven itself: Door glass separated where the panes come out, so the space between them is cleaned
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Ceramic and induction: burnt sugar and boil-over taken off with a blade held flat, then polished
  • How the job is left: Existing damage photographed and pointed out before we start, not after

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in St Ann's

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in St Ann's. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Oven Cleaningin St Ann's

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Our cooker is wired to the wall rather than plugged in. Can it still be pulled out?

Far enough to matter, and no further. The cable to a cooker point has slack in it for exactly that reason, so the appliance comes forward enough for us to clean both sides, the floor underneath and the exposed edges of the units it stands between. Disconnecting it is electrical work and not ours, so if the cooker has to leave the kitchen entirely, that is an electrician first and a clean afterwards.

The drawer under the cooker will not slide out. Does that get done?

Yes, and it usually needs lifting at the stop rather than pulling harder. The storage drawer under a freestanding cooker runs on a simple slide with a catch at the end of its travel, and once it is out there is a tray of crumbs, fat and whatever has gone down the back of it. It goes back in afterwards. It is not a grill pan and it should not be treated as one.

Can it be done with us in the house?

Yes, and most of these are. What it costs you is the kitchen for a couple of hours, and in a house where the back door opens off the kitchen it costs you that route to the yard as well. We work with a window open, keep the products in one place on covered floor, and tell you when the hob is usable again. Where there are small children, the simplest arrangement is a morning slot while they are out.

The cooker has been through several tenancies. Is it worth cleaning?

Usually yes, and we will say if not. What cleaning cannot do is put back what has gone. Rust on a solid plate or across the cavity floor is metal loss rather than soil, chipped enamel holds grease permanently once the glaze is broken, and a perished door seal will not seal again. We photograph all of that before starting, so a landlord has something to weigh a replacement against instead of a verdict arriving after the money has been spent.

Do you cover the whole of St Ann's?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in St Ann's?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in St Ann's?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. Much of the estate separates cars from front doors: parking sits in courts and rear bays while the house opens onto a footpath, and we group St Ann's with Sneinton, Mapperley and Nottingham City Centre on the rota.
