Oven Cleaning for Thorneywood homes

The cooker in most of these terraces stands in the recess the original range came out of, brick reveals close on both sides and a boarded flue above it. That recess, rather than the oven cavity, is where most of the grease has ended up.

Where the kitchen is in the single storey back addition, the cooker is usually standing in the recess the original range came out of. That leaves a wall close on either side and a lintel over the top, so nothing about the appliance is reachable until it comes forward. A gas cooker comes out as far as its flexible hose and its restraint chain allow and no further, because taking it off the bayonet is not ours to do. Worktop is short in these kitchens, so racks, runners and trays soak in a lidded tub we bring in rather than occupying a surface the household needs. The interwar semis above the terraces run to built in doubles at eye level, which is a different job with different problems.

Thorneywood sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly late Victorian and Edwardian terraces built in short runs across the slope, some standing a storey above their own pavement and others dropping below it, with interwar semis on the higher ground, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Thorneywood oven cleaning jobs

The reveals either side of a range recess are plaster over brick, painted, and the surface is never flat. Fat thrown sideways off a hob lands on it, dries, and takes up the texture underneath, so a cloth skates across the high points and leaves every hollow loaded. It reads as a shadow rather than a stain. The underside of the lintel over the recess is worse, because it sits directly in the rising heat and nobody looks up at it. Both come clean with a degreaser and dwell time rather than effort, and both need the cooker forward first. We say before starting where old paint is already lifting, since a soft emulsion comes away with the grease.

How a Thorneywood oven cleaning job actually runs

Book the oven cold, and mean it. That is the one thing that actually moves a slot, because an appliance used for a roast the evening before still holds enough heat the next morning to dry a product out before it has done any work, and a range that has been on overnight is worse again. Morning appointments suit these back kitchens for a second reason: there is one window and one door in the room and both want to be open while the caustic stage is going on, which is a great deal more comfortable before the afternoon in winter. The door through to the hall stays shut for the same period, so nothing carries through to the rooms beyond. Tell us at booking whether the cooker is gas or electric and whether it is freestanding or built in, since that decides how far it travels. Give us the make and model as well if you have it, because that is what tells us in advance whether the inner door pane lifts out on clips or is bonded in. Landlords timing this against a tenancy clean should put the oven first in the week rather than last.

Who books it here

On the practical side: Parking is on-street and often round the corner on the level rather than outside the door. The steps matter more than the parking. Tell us how many run up to your door, and whether the back can be reached without going through the house.

We run Thorneywood on the same round as St Ann's, Sneinton and Porchester.

What we check on every Thorneywood job

Where a range recess has been boarded across the top, there is usually a small louvred vent set into the board to keep air moving in the flue behind. That vent sits directly in the rising heat off a hob, and what collects on it is neither soot nor dust. It is a tacky brown film that arrived as vapour and condensed on the first cool thing it met, and it will not brush off. A dry cloth pushes it about and a damp one spreads it wider, so it takes a degreaser sprayed onto the cloth rather than at the vent, then a minute to work. The louvres themselves come up with a soft brush. What we do not do is take the board off. The flue behind it holds a century of deposit and opening it up is a sweep's job rather than a cleaner's. If that vent is furring faster than it used to, the usual cause is a recirculating hood putting grease back into the room.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Ceramic and induction: burnt sugar and boil-over taken off with a blade held flat, then polished
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Microwave interior, roof plate, turntable and door seal
  • How the job is left: The housing the oven sits in, and the plinth below it
  • The oven itself: Fan cover and back plate removed where the model allows, and the housing behind it degreased

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Thorneywood

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Thorneywood. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Our cooker is gas and it sits in the old chimney recess. Can you get behind it?

As far as the hose and the safety chain let it travel, which is normally enough to reach the sides, the floor beneath and the lower part of the back wall. It is not enough to turn it round. Disconnecting it at the bayonet is gas work and we do not touch it, so if you want the recess itself done properly, book that for a day when the cooker is being moved anyway.

The kitchen is tiny. Where does everything go while you are working?

Into a lidded tub on the floor, on a protective sheet, which is how this is done in any kitchen without spare worktop. The floor and any surface we do use are covered before the first panel comes off. The one thing we ask is that the sink is free, because rinsing is what separates an oven that is clean from one that smokes the first time you heat it.

How long is the oven out of use, and can we cook that evening?

Yes. Most of the time on site is dwell time rather than scrubbing, so the appliance is unusable while we are there and usable the moment we have finished. There is no waiting period and no curing time. The only thing we ask is that it is rinsed to our satisfaction before we reassemble, because an oven that smells or smokes on first heat has been reassembled too early rather than cleaned badly.

Can you do the hob and the extractor at the same time?

Much more efficient than booking them separately, because the soaking the oven parts need is dead time we can spend on the hob. The extractor is the one worth adding here. In a low ceilinged back kitchen the canopy sits close over the hob, so the metal mesh filters load up quickly, and those hold most of the grease in the whole system.

Do you cover the whole of Thorneywood?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Thorneywood?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Thorneywood?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. Parking is on-street and often round the corner on the level rather than outside the door, and we group Thorneywood with St Ann's, Sneinton and Porchester on the rota.
