Oven Cleaning for Porchester homes
Where the back kitchen has never been refitted the cooker stands in the recess left by the old range, an alcove barely wider than the appliance, so nobody has ever cleaned its sides. Refitted kitchens run a built under double instead.
There are two positions for a cooker in this stock and they are not the same job. Where the back kitchen has never been refitted, the appliance stands in the recess left by the old range, an alcove with a wall within a hand's width on either side, so nobody has ever cleaned the sides of the cooker or the plaster beside them. Where a newer run of units has gone in, it is a built under double beneath a continuous worktop, grill in the top cavity and used most days, main oven below and barely touched. The first is limited by how far the appliance slides forward on its own gas hose, which is not far. The second comes apart properly but leaves nowhere to stand anything down.
Porchester sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly interwar and postwar bay-fronted semis running the length of the ridge road, most with a garden front and back, and plots that step up or down from the pavement, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Porchester oven cleaning jobs
The alcove is where the evidence sits. A finger of gap each side of a freestanding cooker acts as a funnel, so fat that spits sideways off the hob runs down the exposed chipboard ends of the units next to it and sets into a brown wick you can feel before you can see it. The painted plaster at the back of the recess has been baked by years of heat off the top of the appliance and carries a hard varnish rather than soft grease, which is a different removal problem. Below, there is no plinth, only floor, and whatever went down the gap since the cooker last moved is lying on it.
How a Porchester oven cleaning job actually runs
Two practical things settle the appointment. The first is where the tank goes. Removable parts soak in a heated tank rather than in your sink, and it wants a socket and somewhere flat and out of the way, which on these plots means the drive or the side path rather than a galley kitchen with an oven door already open across it. Tell us at booking whether the drive will be free, because a car on a single width drive and a full kerb outside leaves nowhere sensible to work. The second is the appliance. Give us the make and roughly how old it is, because door glass differs by model rather than by age: some doors give up their inner panes in a minute and some are bonded shut for good. We would far rather say that on the phone than standing in your kitchen. Older ovens in the unrefitted kitchens here often carry rough grey liners on the side walls, which are catalytic and are destroyed by anything caustic, so those get worked around rather than treated. There is no waiting period afterwards and no smell on first heat.
Who books it here
On the practical side: Most pairs of semis have a side gate and a passage to the back garden, so equipment goes round rather than through the house. Drives are single width and usually occupied, and the ridge road carries buses, so we load from a side street.
We run Porchester on the same round as Mapperley, Carlton and Thorneywood.
What we check on every Porchester job
Look up in one of these kitchens and you can see how far the grease has actually travelled. Where the cooker stands in the old recess there is frequently no hood at all, or a recirculating one with a charcoal cartridge nobody has changed since it went in, so nothing ever leaves the room. Steam and fat aerosol rise into the recess, meet the ceiling above it and spread outward, which is why the paint in a circle over the hob is a different shade from the paint at the far end of the room, and why the top of the nearest wall unit is tacky rather than dusty. A metal mesh filter, where a hood has one, holds more grease than anything else in the kitchen and comes out of the tank silver. A charcoal cartridge cannot be cleaned at all, only replaced, and we say so rather than washing it and handing it back looking convincingly wet.
What the oven cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- How the job is left: Freestanding cookers pulled out where safe, so the sides and the gap are done
- How the job is left: Floor and worktop protected before anything is opened or applied
- Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Charcoal filters checked and reported, since those are replaced rather than cleaned
- Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Extractor canopy inside and out, and the grease trap where there is one
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What oven cleaning costs in Porchester
Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£45 to £80
Typical per appliance in Porchester. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per appliance |
|---|---|
| Single oven | £45 to £80 |
| Double oven, or oven and separate grill | £70 to £110 |
| Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm | £80 to £130 |
| Aga or heat storage cooker | £100 to £200 |
| Hob, gas or ceramic | £10 to £30 |
| Extractor hood | £15 to £30 |
The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Microwave | £15 to £30 |
| Extra grill pan or set of racks | £5 to £10 |
| Heavy soiling, an oven left for years | £20 to £30 on top |
| Several appliances in one visit | Usually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Our cooker sits in a recess with a wall each side. Can you clean behind it?
As far as the appliance safely comes, which on a gas cooker is the length of the flexible hose and no further, because taking one off its bayonet fitting is not our work. On most of these it slides out far enough to reach the sides, the back of the recess and the floor underneath. Where a stability bracket holds it, that stays fitted and we work at arm's length with a light, then say what could not be reached.
There is no spare worktop in the kitchen. Where do the racks and trays go?
Out of the room. The removable parts soak in a heated tank, and the tank stands outside the back door or at the van rather than in a galley kitchen where the open oven door already blocks the only walking route. Worktop and floor are sheeted before anything is opened. Everything goes back in the order it came out, runners the right way round, so the kitchen stays usable around us for most of the visit.
We have a pyrolytic oven. Is there any point in booking this?
Often yes, and not for the cavity. The self clean cycle deals with the enamel it can reach and nothing else, so the door glass, the space between the panes, the seal area, the fascia, the racks and the side runners all sit outside it, and on most models the racks have to come out before the cycle runs anyway. We leave the cavity coating alone, because caustic and abrasives wreck the surface that makes the cycle work, and do everything it never touches.
Can you do the hob and the extractor on the same visit?
Yes, and in this stock it is usually the better booking. They are priced as separate items because they are separate work, but they soak in the same tank on the same visit. Gas burner caps, crowns, pan supports and the tray under them come off and go in whole, and a metal mesh filter goes in alongside. If the hood takes a charcoal cartridge we check it and tell you the size to order, rather than pretending it has been cleaned.
Do you cover the whole of Porchester?
Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does oven cleaning cost in Porchester?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start oven cleaning in Porchester?
Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. Most pairs of semis have a side gate and a passage to the back garden, so equipment goes round rather than through the house, and we group Porchester with Mapperley, Carlton and Thorneywood on the rota.
