Oven Cleaning for Woodthorpe homes

Kitchens here were opened into the dining room at some point, which is why so many hoods recirculate rather than duct. That loads the mesh far faster than a vented hood does, and the charcoal cartridge behind it was never a cleaning item at all.

A kitchen in this stock has nearly always been altered, and the alteration is what decides the oven job. The wall into the dining room came out, the run of units got longer, and the cooker ended up on whichever wall had space rather than the one with the old flue. Once a hood sits on an internal wall there is nowhere to duct it, so it recirculates through a charcoal cartridge, and a recirculating hood loads its mesh far faster than a ducted one because the same air passes through it again and again. The appliance itself is usually older than the kitchen built around it, which is why we ask for the model before quoting rather than after arriving.

Woodthorpe sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly wide interwar detached houses and large semis on generous plots, with 1950s and 1960s detached infill on the roads falling away from the park, and mature gardens behind almost all of it, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Woodthorpe oven cleaning jobs

There is rarely anywhere to put a hot rack down. A double oven in a tall housing opens two doors into a walkway, the worktop either side is short because the run was planned around a sink and a hob, and the dining table is now in the same room with a cloth on it. So we bring our own stand and cover the floor and the nearest length of worktop before a single screw is turned. The other thing we look for is the kick board under a built under oven. Fat that has run down the front of the appliance collects in the gap behind it and sets hard, out of sight of anyone cleaning the front.

How a Woodthorpe oven cleaning job actually runs

Tell us the make and the model number before we come, and if you can find the manual, say what the cavity lining is. Kitchens in Woodthorpe have been refitted at very different dates, so on one road we will meet a plain enamel fan oven from the eighties, a catalytic lined double from the nineties and a modern pyrolytic in a house done last year. Those three are cleaned in three different ways, and the wrong chemistry on a catalytic liner ruins it permanently rather than marking it. The larger houses add a second variable, because a range cooker sitting in a purpose built recess is two cavities, a separate grill compartment, a hotplate and a good deal more dismantling than a built in double. That is a longer booking and we would rather set the time aside honestly than run over into your afternoon. We work with the kitchen out of use for the duration, so pick a day when nobody needs to cook at lunchtime, and clear the worktop either side of the cooker beforehand so there is somewhere for parts to go.

Who books it here

On the practical side: Almost every house has a drive, so the van comes off the road and the equipment travels a short distance. Woodthorpe Drive carries buses and is the wrong place to stop, so we load from the side roads. Gravel is worth mentioning when you book.

We run Woodthorpe on the same round as Sherwood, Daybrook and Mapperley.

What we check on every Woodthorpe job

Behind the fan is where the evidence is. The back plate in a fan oven is held by a nut in the centre or a handful of screws around the rim, and lifting it off exposes the fan blades, the element wrapped round them and the cavity behind. In a kitchen where a hood has been recirculating for years, that space is coated in a soft brown film rather than the hard black carbon on the cavity walls, because the air passing over it never gets hot enough to bake it on properly. It wipes away easily once it is reachable and it is completely unreachable while the plate is on, which is why a wiped oven can still smell on the first roast of the winter. We photograph it off and on, and where a plate is bonded or the insulation behind it has broken up, we leave it alone and tell you why.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The oven itself: Fan cover and back plate removed where the model allows, and the housing behind it degreased
  • The oven itself: Interior light lens, fascia, controls and door handle
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Extractor canopy inside and out, and the grease trap where there is one
  • How the job is left: Floor and worktop protected before anything is opened or applied

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Woodthorpe

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Woodthorpe. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Our extractor recirculates rather than venting outside. Is the filter worth doing?

The metal mesh is, and it holds most of the grease in the whole hood. It comes out, goes into hot solution and comes back looking like new. The charcoal cartridge sitting behind it is a different thing entirely: it absorbs odour, it is replaced rather than washed, and washing one destroys it. We check it, tell you the type and leave you to order it. A recirculating hood wants that cartridge changed more often than most households realise.

The kitchen is open to the dining room. Will the house smell of it afterwards?

It should not, and if it does then something has been left in the cavity. Everything applied gets rinsed off repeatedly until the water comes back clean, which is the slow part of the visit. The oven is usable straight away and the first heat should give you nothing at all. What does travel is the smell while we are working, so on a ground floor that has been opened up we ask for a window at each end and the hall doors shut.

The oven has not been touched for years. Is it too far gone?

Almost certainly not, because baked on soil is carbon rather than damage and carbon comes off with chemistry and time. What does not come back is rust, chipped enamel and crazed door glass, and an oven left a long while often has all three sitting under the black. We look before we start, point out what is damage and what is soil, and photograph both, so there is no argument afterwards about which was there before we opened the door.

Can you pull the cooker out and do behind it?

A freestanding electric cooker on a plug, yes, and we do it as standard so the sides and the floor gap get cleaned. A gas cooker on a bayonet fitting we leave where it stands, because moving one means disconnecting and reconnecting a gas appliance and that is work for a registered engineer rather than a cleaner. A hardwired oven or hob stays connected too. Where a range is built into a recess there is usually no gap to reach anyway.

Do you cover the whole of Woodthorpe?

Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Woodthorpe?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Woodthorpe?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. Almost every house has a drive, so the van comes off the road and the equipment travels a short distance, and we group Woodthorpe with Sherwood, Daybrook and Mapperley on the rota.
