Oven Cleaning for Old Basford homes

The constraint is not the oven, it is where the parts go while they soak. A terrace rear kitchen has a single drainer and no worktop run, so racks, runners and the door panes need floor that is also the way through.

Where the cooker stands decides how this visit runs. In the terraces it is usually set into the old range recess in the rear kitchen, with masonry close on both sides and a single drainer as the only flat surface in the room. A full strip down produces racks, side runners, a grill pan and two panes of glass, and there is nowhere in there to put any of it, so we bring our own stand and lay a protected run on the floor rather than borrowing a worktop that does not exist. The postwar semis are the opposite case: a built under single in a fitted run, worktop either side, and a job that behaves the way an oven clean is supposed to.

Old Basford sits in NG6, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly nineteenth century terraces built for the hosiery and lace trades, with postwar council semis filling the gaps left by clearance, and small modern closes on former factory land, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Old Basford oven cleaning jobs

The surface that surprises people in these rear kitchens is the ceiling. Plenty of them have no canopy hood at all, only a fan in the wall or a recirculating unit that gave up years ago, so everything coming off a pan lands on a ceiling low enough to touch. It goes brown in a band directly above the hob, takes the light fitting with it, and reads as a tobacco stain when it is cooking grease. It comes off with degreaser and a lot of rinsing, and it is worth doing on the same visit as the oven, because that band is what makes the room still look dirty after the appliance is finished.

How an Old Basford oven cleaning job actually runs

An oven visit wants the van near the door for longer than a window round does, because the soaking tank stays in it and the parts travel out and back. On the terraced streets, parked both sides, that is the whole planning problem: we take the slot that gives us somewhere legal to stand within a carry of your front door, which in practice means mid morning once the school run has cleared, and not on the day the bins are out. The semis and the newer closes have a drive or a verge and none of that applies. The other thing to settle at booking is that the cooker is out of use while we are there. In a household with one appliance and no second hob that matters more than people expect, so we tell you how long it will be down rather than leaving you to work it out at teatime. Where the visit is part of a landlord turnaround, put the oven in before the cleaners rather than after, because a stripped appliance drips and nobody wants that kitchen floor done twice.

Who books it here

On the practical side: On-street throughout, and the terraced rows have shared rear entries that are frequently gated with a lock nobody has the key to any more. Tell us if the back way is usable, because otherwise the machine and the hose come through the living room.

We run Old Basford on the same round as New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood.

What we check on every Old Basford job

The recess is the second half of the job in a terrace. Where a cooker stands in an old range opening, the masonry either side is porous and either bare or painted with something thin, and it has taken decades of splatter with nobody able to reach it, because the appliance is in the way. Pulled forward, those two faces are visibly darker than the wall around them and the deposit has gone into the surface rather than sitting on top of it, so it lightens rather than clears and we say which before we start rather than after. Above it, the old flue is often still open behind a plate or a vent, and soot works down onto the hob in windy weather. If your hob is gritty again a day after it was cleaned, that is usually where it is arriving from rather than anything you are doing wrong.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The oven itself: Door glass separated where the panes come out, so the space between them is cleaned
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Ceramic and induction: burnt sugar and boil-over taken off with a blade held flat, then polished
  • How the job is left: Existing damage photographed and pointed out before we start, not after
  • The oven itself: Fan cover and back plate removed where the model allows, and the housing behind it degreased

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Old Basford

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Old Basford. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Oven Cleaningin Old Basford

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Do you need our sink and worktop?

No, and in most of these rear kitchens there is no worktop to lend us. The soaking happens in a heated tank in the van, the removable parts travel out to it, and we work off our own stand with the floor sheeted. What we do need is cold water at a tap, a socket, and somewhere to stand a bucket. Where the room is very tight, the door and the shelves go outside to be worked on.

The cooker sits in a recess and will not pull out. Is that a problem?

Not for the clean itself, because the cavity, the door and every removable part come out of the front. It matters for what can be reached at the sides. Where an appliance is set into a masonry opening we clean the faces we can get to and tell you honestly what is left behind it. We do not disconnect gas or hardwired appliances, so anything needing the cooker off its fitting waits for whoever fits it.

We are having the kitchen replaced. When is the oven worth cleaning?

If the appliance goes with the units, do not bother. If the oven is staying and the kitchen is changing, clean it once the fitters have finished and gone, because a strip out in a small rear kitchen puts dust and old sealant over everything and a worktop gets cut in the room. If the cooker is coming out and going back the same day, that is the one moment the sides of it and the wall behind are reachable, and it is worth taking while it lasts.

The oven is old and the enamel is chipped. Is it still worth doing?

Usually yes, with one honest caveat. Cleaning takes off carbon, it does not repair enamel, and a chip that has begun to rust will still be a rusty chip at the end of it. What changes is that the door glass clears, the shelves come back, and the thing stops smoking every time it is switched on. If the house is being sold or relet, that is the difference between an appliance reading as neglected and one reading as simply old.

Do you cover the whole of Old Basford?

Yes, all of NG6 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Old Basford?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Old Basford?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. On-street throughout, and the terraced rows have shared rear entries that are frequently gated with a lock nobody has the key to any more, and we group Old Basford with New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood on the rota.
