Driveway & Patio Cleaning for Old Basford homes

Most of these terraces have no drive at all. The equivalent job is a walled back yard, closed on four sides with one gully and one gate, where the slurry has nowhere to run and gets lifted rather than flushed away.

Three different grounds here and only one of them is a drive. The terraces have a walled yard, generally hard brick or a concrete screed poured over it later, closed to head height with a gate onto the entry. The postwar semis have a strip of concrete down the side or a front garden that has been taken out and block paved for a car. The newer closes are block paved throughout, often as a shared drive where two households park nose to tail and nobody can point at the line between them. The yards are the awkward ones, because a rotary head needs room to travel and a yard is mostly edges.

Old Basford sits in NG6, under Nottingham City Council. Regular fortnightly work in the owner occupied semis, and a steady run of landlord turnarounds on the terraces, a lot of which are rented rather than lived in by their owners. Deep cleans come third and cluster after a sale, when the carpet has come up in an empty house and nobody expected what was under it.

What we run into on Old Basford driveway & patio cleaning jobs

The joints decide the pressure in an old yard. Hard brick pavers of that age are dense enough to take plenty, but what sits between them is lime mortar or nothing at all, and a lance run along a lime joint empties it in seconds and then keeps going into the bedding underneath. The wall of the house is the second thing to watch. Yard paving here has frequently been laid over, then screeded again, so the finished level now sits at or above the damp course, and water driven at the foot of the wall goes somewhere nobody can see it going. We work that last strip low and across it rather than into it.

How an Old Basford driveway & patio cleaning job actually runs

Water and standing space are the two things to sort before the day. A yard job needs a tap and a hose route, and in these houses that means either an outside tap on the rear wall or a run from the kitchen with a door propped open, so tell us which you have got. The machine sits with the van, which on a terraced street means the hose has to reach from wherever we can legally stand, through the entry if it is unlocked and through the house if it is not. On the semis and the newer closes none of that arises, because the work is at the front and the van is on it. The other local point is the neighbour. Yards here share a wall and an entry and the closes share a drive, so we agree in advance where your surface stops, what happens to any water crossing that line, and whether they want theirs doing at the same time. Spring is the slot to aim for, since a yard walled to head height holds its growth later into the year than an open drive does.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly nineteenth century terraces built for the hosiery and lace trades, with postwar council semis filling the gaps left by clearance, and small modern closes on former factory land, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Old Basford on the same round as New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood.

What we check on every Old Basford job

An enclosed yard does not come back evenly, and that is worth knowing beforehand rather than afterwards. The strip along the wall that never gets sun carries more growth than the rest of the yard to begin with, and it is the first place the green returns once the surface is clean, because the wall keeps it shaded and damp all year round. Six months on you can have a yard that looks clean everywhere except a band a couple of feet wide down one side. That is the aspect rather than the clean failing. The other spot is the gully in the corner, which on these houses is generally the only outlet and often an old trapped one under a heavy grate. It fills with precisely what we have just lifted off the paving, so it gets cleared and flushed at the end of the visit rather than left to be discovered in the next downpour.

What the driveway & patio cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Putting it back: Sand worked down and topped up in stages rather than scattered once and swept off
  • Putting it back: Jointing compound instead of loose sand where joints are wide, on a slope, or where you want the weeds held down longer
  • Putting it back: Sealing quoted as a separate return visit on a properly dry surface, never the same day
  • Putting it back: Drainage channels and gully gratings cleared of what came off the paving

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full driveway & patio cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Old Basford property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What driveway & patio cleaning costs in Old Basford

Cleaning priced by the square metre at typical UK rates, with a minimum charge on small jobs. Re-sanding and sealing are quoted separately. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£100 to £200

Typical cost in Old Basford. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Cleaning, per square metre£3 to £6
Minimum charge on a small jobUsually billed as a 30 m² minimum
Patio, up to 20 m²£90 to £160
Single drive, 30 to 40 m²£100 to £200
Double drive, 50 to 70 m²£150 to £280
Large drive, 90 m² and over£225 to £350

The minimum charge is what catches people out. A 15 m² patio is usually billed as 30 m², so at £3 to £6 per square metre it costs the same £90 to £180 as a patio twice the size. Cleaning a patio and a path in the same visit spreads that minimum across more ground.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Block paving re-sanding, per m²£1.50 to £3
Sealing, on a separate dry visit, per m²£4 to £10
Clean and seal together, single drive£200 to £300
Heavy moss, weed or oil pre-treatment, per m²£2 to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Can it be done if the only way in is through the house?

Yes, and it is worth saying so when you book. Hoses through a living room means sheeting the floor and the doorway and working out the route before anything is switched on, and that changes how long the visit takes. If the rear entry is usable it is quicker for everybody. Where a gate is locked and nobody has a key, a neighbour's yard is sometimes the way in, and that is a conversation to have beforehand.

Will jetting damage old brick paving?

The brick itself usually takes it. What does not is everything between and beneath it: lime joints wash out, the bedding follows them, and then the pavers rock underfoot. So a yard like that is cleaned at lower pressure than a concrete drive would be, with the head kept moving, and the joints filled again afterwards. Where a paver is already loose we point it out first, because washing makes a loose one obvious rather than causing it.

Where does the dirty water go if the yard has one gully?

Into a machine rather than into the gully. What comes off paving is silt, dead algae and moss, and it will block an old trapped gully faster than anything else you could put down there. We squeegee the slurry to one point, vacuum it up and take it away, then flush the gully with clean water at the end. In a walled yard with nowhere for it to run, collecting it is not a preference, it is the only option available.

Half the drive belongs to next door. Can you do both?

On the shared drives in the newer closes that is usually the sensible answer, because a hard line drawn halfway across block paving shows for months and neither half looks right on its own. We will quote the whole area and split it between you, or quote each side separately, whichever suits the two households. The same goes for a shared entry behind the terraces: it belongs to nobody individually and it cleans up best done in one pass.

Do you cover the whole of Old Basford?

Yes, all of NG6 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does driveway & patio cleaning cost in Old Basford?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the square metreage, the surface, and whether you want re-sanding or sealing afterwards. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start driveway & patio cleaning in Old Basford?

Within a week or two from March onwards, and we watch the forecast rather than book a hard date in winter. On-street throughout, and the terraced rows have shared rear entries that are frequently gated with a lock nobody has the key to any more, and we group Old Basford with New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood on the rota.
