Driveway & Patio Cleaning for New Basford homes
Almost none of these terraces have a drive, so the work is the back yard, the entry floor and the front threshold. Walled yards that get no direct sun grow green slime rather than the black film an open drive carries.
Very few of these terraces have a drive, so this job is almost never a drive. It is the back yard, the floor of the shared entry, the front threshold and the strip of paving under the window. The yards are small, walled to about head height on three sides, and they get very little direct sun, so what grows on them is thick green moss and a slime that stays slippery all winter rather than the black film an open driveway carries. The flags themselves are old and bedded on ash or on soil rather than on any proper base, and several of them rock underfoot. That changes the pressure we work at, and it changes what we tell you before the machine is switched on.
New Basford sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. A mix of everything, because it is our own patch: regular domestic rounds, landlord turnarounds on the terraces, and small commercial units in the old lace buildings.
What we run into on New Basford driveway & patio cleaning jobs
One gully in a corner takes everything a yard this size produces, and on a good many of these houses it is the same gully the kitchen waste pipe discharges into. That matters the moment a washer starts, because the slurry coming off old flags is silt and dead moss and it will fill the grating in minutes. So the gully gets covered, the surface is worked toward a collection point, and what comes off is vacuumed up rather than chased down the drain. The threshold is the other thing to check first. Where a later concrete layer has raised the yard to sit level with the back door, water pushed at that joint goes under it rather than away from it.
How a New Basford driveway & patio cleaning job actually runs
Getting water and a machine round to a yard behind a mid terrace is most of the planning. There is rarely an outside tap on these houses, so we either run from the kitchen with the back door propped or bring our own supply with us, and that is worth settling at the quote rather than on the morning. The machine itself stays at the front or in the passage and the hose comes through, which means a route across whatever is down on the hall floor, so that gets protected first. Where the water goes is the other half of it. A yard this size has no lawn, no border and one gully, the wall on the far side is somebody else's yard at the same level as yours, and there is nothing between the paving and the back door but a threshold. So the slurry is collected as we work rather than pushed anywhere convenient, and the threshold and the air brick are covered before the trigger is pulled once. On timing, a walled yard that never sees direct sun needs a genuinely dry run of days rather than one dry afternoon, which is why spring is worth waiting for here.
Who books it here
The housing here is mostly Victorian terraces and former lace-industry buildings, with pockets of newer flats around the tram line, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
We run New Basford on the same round as Hyson Green, Sherwood and Bulwell.
What we check on every New Basford job
The passage floor between two houses shows this better than anything else on the property. It is covered, so it never gets sun and never fully dries, and it is usually blue brick or a later concrete screed poured over whatever was there before. What grows on it is not the black algal film of an open drive: it is a green slime, genuinely slippery, lying in a continuous sheet and thickest along the two edges where the walls meet the floor and water runs. Underneath, the old blue brick is generally sound and the later screed very often is not, so the wash finds every crack in it and lifts flakes that were already loose. We look for those first and show you, because a surface that comes up clean but patchy afterwards gets blamed on the machine. The front threshold is the other one, worn stone or blue brick dished in the middle by a century of feet, holding water and taking the least pressure of anything here.
What the driveway & patio cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Putting it back: Sealing quoted as a separate return visit on a properly dry surface, never the same day
- Before the water goes on: Cars, bins and furniture moved off, planting and painted timber sheeted
- The clean: Oil, tyre scuff and leaf tannin staining worked separately, since they are chemistry problems rather than soil
- Putting it back: Drainage channels and gully gratings cleared of what came off the paving
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full driveway & patio cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What driveway & patio cleaning costs in New Basford
Cleaning priced by the square metre at typical UK rates, with a minimum charge on small jobs. Re-sanding and sealing are quoted separately. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£100 to £200
Typical cost in New Basford. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Cleaning, per square metre | £3 to £6 |
| Minimum charge on a small job | Usually billed as a 30 m² minimum |
| Patio, up to 20 m² | £90 to £160 |
| Single drive, 30 to 40 m² | £100 to £200 |
| Double drive, 50 to 70 m² | £150 to £280 |
| Large drive, 90 m² and over | £225 to £350 |
The minimum charge is what catches people out. A 15 m² patio is usually billed as 30 m², so at £3 to £6 per square metre it costs the same £90 to £180 as a patio twice the size. Cleaning a patio and a path in the same visit spreads that minimum across more ground.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Block paving re-sanding, per m² | £1.50 to £3 |
| Sealing, on a separate dry visit, per m² | £4 to £10 |
| Clean and seal together, single drive | £200 to £300 |
| Heavy moss, weed or oil pre-treatment, per m² | £2 to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Can you clean the entry as well as the yard?
Yes, and it is worth agreeing it with the neighbour beforehand, because a shared entry normally belongs to both houses and the water and slurry travel under both gates. It is usually the dirtiest surface either of you owns, since it is a covered passage with no sun in it that everything gets carried through. Tell us if the gate is bolted on their side, because that decides whether we work in from the street end or out from the yard.
The yard is old flags and one of them rocks.
We will point it out and photograph it before anything is switched on. A flag rocks because whatever it was bedded on has washed or settled away underneath, and full pressure into the joint takes more of that bedding out and can float the flag entirely. So the pressure drops across that area, the lance stays off the joints, and it gets cleaned as far as is sensible rather than as far as is possible. Relaying it is groundwork and a different trade.
Is it worth sealing a yard like this once it has been cleaned?
Generally no, and the reason is the shade rather than the product. A sealer has to go onto a surface that is dry all the way through, and a walled yard facing away from the sun rarely gets there even in summer. Put over residual moisture it goes milky and then has to be stripped off, which is a worse job than the cleaning was. Filling the joints properly and keeping the gully clear does more for these yards than any coating.
How long before the moss comes back?
Sooner here than on an open drive, because shade and standing damp are what it wants and a walled yard supplies both. Washing takes the growth off, it does not kill what is left rooted in the joint, and no honest contractor promises otherwise from a pressure washer alone. A professional use moss killer is a plant protection product and only somebody holding a certificate of competence may apply one, so ask which product and ask to see the certificate before anyone treats it.
Do you cover the whole of New Basford?
Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does driveway & patio cleaning cost in New Basford?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the square metreage, the surface, and whether you want re-sanding or sealing afterwards. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start driveway & patio cleaning in New Basford?
Within a week or two from March onwards, and we watch the forecast rather than book a hard date in winter. Straightforward, and we group New Basford with Hyson Green, Sherwood and Bulwell on the rota.
