Driveway & Patio Cleaning for Hucknall homes
Three grounds, three jobs. Postwar estate housing with a concrete apron laid in bays, long shared drives serving two or three of the newer plots, and permeable block paving toward the bypass, which must never be re-sanded the way the ordinary sort is.
Three surfaces, and they are not interchangeable. The postwar estate housing usually has a concrete apron laid in bays with a mortar joint between them, or a tarmac strip up to a garage, and neither takes the pressure a block drive shrugs off: tarmac loses its binder and goes grey and open, and a rotary held too long on old concrete brings the aggregate up. The newer plots toward the bypass are block paved, and a growing share of them are permeable block paving, which looks ordinary until you notice the spacer nibs and the wide joints. That is a drainage structure rather than a surface, and it is cleaned and refilled differently.
Hucknall sits in NG15, under Ashfield District Council. Regular domestic cleaning across the older housing, and a steady flow of after builders work on the newer estates toward the bypass.
What we run into on Hucknall driveway & patio cleaning jobs
Permeable paving is the one people get wrong, including contractors. The joints are wider than a standard block drive and they are filled with angular grit rather than kiln dried sand, because water is meant to pass through them into the sub base. Fill those joints with fine sand and the drive stops draining, then it ponds and the neighbour finds out before you do. Jetting hard does the same thing from the other direction by driving silt down into the layer that is supposed to be open. We identify it first, wash it at reduced pressure and refill with the correct grit.
How a Hucknall driveway & patio cleaning job actually runs
Where the water goes decides how a wash is planned here, and it changes with the surface. On the postwar estate housing a concrete apron usually falls toward the road, so the slurry heads for the highway gully unless it is swept and vacuumed up first, which is what we do rather than flushing it away and letting somebody else find it. On the newer plots a shared drive serving two or three houses is common, and that has to be arranged with the neighbour rather than announced to them: the drive is out of use for most of a day, cars need moving before we arrive and not halfway through, and the run off crosses ground that is not only yours. Where the parking is a communal court rather than a private drive, the freeholder or the management company decides, not the resident. Timing matters more than in most work we do. Block paving cannot be re-sanded until it is dry, so an autumn booking often becomes a wash on one day and a return for the sand, and sealing is always a separate visit onto a properly dry surface.
Who books it here
The housing here is mostly former mining town housing, terraces near the centre and postwar estates around them, with new development toward the bypass, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
We run Hucknall on the same round as Bulwell, Arnold and New Basford.
What we check on every Hucknall job
The find that comes up most on the estate drives is a surface laid in two goes. A run of blocks put down when the house was built, then an extension added years later with whatever was available, and the two cleaning up to noticeably different colours once the algae is off. It is worth saying before the wash rather than after, because people expect a clean rather than a reveal. Black spot lichen is the other one, and it sits on shaded and north facing areas as flat dark discs that no pressure removes: it needs a proprietary treatment and dwell time, and pressure high enough to shift it will scar the block. Oil is a chemistry job too, and on the estate aprons it is always the same rectangle where a car has stood for years. Edge kerbs get checked before we start, since haunching that has already failed lets blocks spread once the joints are washed out.
What the driveway & patio cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Putting it back: Drainage channels and gully gratings cleared of what came off the paving
- Before the water goes on: A test patch in a low visibility corner on any stone we have not worked on before
- The clean: Slurry swept and vacuumed up rather than flushed into the nearest gully or run onto next door's garden
- Putting it back: Everything we moved put back where it was
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full driveway & patio cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What driveway & patio cleaning costs in Hucknall
Cleaning priced by the square metre at typical UK rates, with a minimum charge on small jobs. Re-sanding and sealing are quoted separately. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£100 to £200
Typical cost in Hucknall. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Cleaning, per square metre | £3 to £6 |
| Minimum charge on a small job | Usually billed as a 30 m² minimum |
| Patio, up to 20 m² | £90 to £160 |
| Single drive, 30 to 40 m² | £100 to £200 |
| Double drive, 50 to 70 m² | £150 to £280 |
| Large drive, 90 m² and over | £225 to £350 |
The minimum charge is what catches people out. A 15 m² patio is usually billed as 30 m², so at £3 to £6 per square metre it costs the same £90 to £180 as a patio twice the size. Cleaning a patio and a path in the same visit spreads that minimum across more ground.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Block paving re-sanding, per m² | £1.50 to £3 |
| Sealing, on a separate dry visit, per m² | £4 to £10 |
| Clean and seal together, single drive | £200 to £300 |
| Heavy moss, weed or oil pre-treatment, per m² | £2 to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

How do I know whether my drive is permeable?
Look at the joints and the block edges. Permeable blocks have small nibs moulded onto the sides that hold the units apart, so the gaps are wide and even, and what is in them is a dark angular grit rather than fine buff sand. Water also disappears off it in heavy rain instead of running to a gully. Send us a close photograph of a few blocks before we quote and we will tell you.
Our drive is old concrete with cracks between the bays. Is jetting safe?
At the right pressure, yes, and it is a real improvement on a green slab. What we avoid is holding a lance on one spot, which erodes weak concrete and exposes the aggregate permanently. The bay joints are the weak line, so weed growth there is pulled out by hand first and the joint is washed rather than cut open. If the mortar has already gone, we will show you before rather than after.
We share the drive with next door. What do we need to sort out first?
Agreement about the day, and both cars off it before we arrive. A shared drive means we are working across ground your neighbour uses, so they need to know it is out of action for most of a day and that water and slurry will cross it. If they want their half doing at the same time it is far cheaper than a separate visit, and the finish matches, which it will not if the two halves are cleaned a year apart.
Can you seal it the same day you clean it?
No, and anyone offering to should be questioned. Sealer applied over paving that is still holding water traps it underneath, and it goes cloudy or lifts within months. Block paving needs to dry through, the joints have to be re-sanded first, and that wants a settled dry spell rather than a dry afternoon. We book sealing as a return visit and we will move it if the forecast turns.
Do you cover the whole of Hucknall?
Yes, all of NG15 and the surrounding streets, under Ashfield District Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does driveway & patio cleaning cost in Hucknall?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the square metreage, the surface, and whether you want re-sanding or sealing afterwards. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start driveway & patio cleaning in Hucknall?
Within a week or two from March onwards, and we watch the forecast rather than book a hard date in winter. Good, and reachable on the same tram line that runs past our base, and we group Hucknall with Bulwell, Arnold and New Basford on the rota.
