Driveway & Patio Cleaning for Hyson Green homes
There are no drives to speak of. What there is instead: a strip of paving where a front garden used to be, and a small rear yard behind the back addition that faces the wrong way, never fully dries and is walked by every flat.
The ground here is rarely one material. A rear yard on a Victorian terrace has usually been patched three times over: original blue engineering brick or quarry pavers laid to fall towards a gully, a slab of concrete where an outside toilet or a coal store came down, and a run of modern paving bedded over the top of both. Each takes a different pressure, and the joints between them are where water finds its way underneath. Front gardens are the other half of the work, paved over to a metre or two of block or slab behind a dwarf wall, and in a fair number of cases laid with no edge restraint at all. Say which of those you have when you ask, because it changes the machine settings before it changes anything else.
Hyson Green sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. A high proportion of let property, so landlord turnarounds and end of tenancy cleans outnumber regular domestic work. Multi-occupancy conversions mean more kitchens and bathrooms per building than the address suggests.
What we run into on Hyson Green driveway & patio cleaning jobs
Look at where the bins stand. In a converted house the yard is the bin store for every flat in the building, so four or five wheeled bins sit on the same square metre of paving for years and the wheels cut a track into it. Underneath them is a permanent damp patch that never sees sun or air, and around them the algae film is at its thickest, which matters because that patch lies on the only route between the back door and the passage. On a wet morning that is a slip hazard, not an appearance problem. We move the bins, treat what is under them, and set them back on a different line if the surface allows.
How a Hyson Green driveway & patio cleaning job actually runs
Water in and water out are both harder here than the paving is. No van can stand outside most of these buildings, so a feed comes through the passage from wherever we are parked, and a long hose run costs pressure at the head, which is why we work from a tank and a pump rather than off a distant tap. Getting the dirty water away matters more than getting clean water in. What comes off a yard is silt, dead algae and whatever the bins have leaked, and the gully in that yard is the same drain the downpipe uses, so flushing slurry into it is how a building ends up with a blocked gully by spring. We sweep and vacuum it and take it away. The neighbour is the third constraint. Yard walls here are low enough that overspray goes straight over, so we knock first and we will not run a rotary head against a shared wall on a day somebody has washing out. Spring is the season to book, when winter growth is at its worst and there is drying weather for any re sanding afterwards.
Who books it here
The housing here is mostly tightly packed Victorian terraces, many converted to flats, with tram stops threaded through the middle of it, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
We run Hyson Green on the same round as Radford, New Basford and Sherwood.
What we check on every Hyson Green job
The front strip fails in a way worth seeing before it is cleaned. Where a front garden was paved over for a car, the blocks were often laid straight onto sand with no edge restraint along the pavement line, because a dwarf wall was already there and looked as though it was doing the job. It is not. Under load the outer course creeps towards the footway, the joints open, and kiln dried sand washes out into the street gutter every time it rains hard. Jetting that and walking away makes it worse, not better, and on a strip this narrow the movement shows within a season. So growth comes out by hand first, the clean runs at a pressure the bedding will take, and the sand goes back in stages once the surface is dry. Where the outer course has already moved we say so and photograph it, because holding a course that has lost its restraint is a groundworker's job and no amount of sand does it.
What the driveway & patio cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- The clean: The run-off checked before we leave, not after somebody complains
- The clean: Black spot lichen treated with a proprietary remover and dwell time, because pressure alone does not lift it and pressure hard enough to try will damage the slab
- The clean: Rotary surface cleaner across the open area, which is what keeps every pass even
- Before the water goes on: Cars, bins and furniture moved off, planting and painted timber sheeted
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full driveway & patio cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What driveway & patio cleaning costs in Hyson Green
Cleaning priced by the square metre at typical UK rates, with a minimum charge on small jobs. Re-sanding and sealing are quoted separately. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£100 to £200
Typical cost in Hyson Green. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Cleaning, per square metre | £3 to £6 |
| Minimum charge on a small job | Usually billed as a 30 m² minimum |
| Patio, up to 20 m² | £90 to £160 |
| Single drive, 30 to 40 m² | £100 to £200 |
| Double drive, 50 to 70 m² | £150 to £280 |
| Large drive, 90 m² and over | £225 to £350 |
The minimum charge is what catches people out. A 15 m² patio is usually billed as 30 m², so at £3 to £6 per square metre it costs the same £90 to £180 as a patio twice the size. Cleaning a patio and a path in the same visit spreads that minimum across more ground.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Block paving re-sanding, per m² | £1.50 to £3 |
| Sealing, on a separate dry visit, per m² | £4 to £10 |
| Clean and seal together, single drive | £200 to £300 |
| Heavy moss, weed or oil pre-treatment, per m² | £2 to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

There is no outside tap. Can the yard still be cleaned?
Yes, and it is worth settling how before the day rather than on it. Most converted flats have no external tap at all, and where one exists it is usually fed off the ground floor flat's supply, so somebody is paying for the water we use. Either we work from the machine's own tank and refill it, or we take a feed from a tap inside with the occupier's agreement. What we will not do is start using a supply nobody has agreed to.
It goes green again within a few months. Why?
Because of where the yard sits rather than how it was cleaned. Enclosed on three sides by the back addition and boundary walls, facing away from the sun and drying slowly, it is close to ideal for algae, and washing lifts the growth without killing what is left in the surface. Killing it is a different job with a legal edge: professional use moss killers are plant protection products, and only someone holding a certificate of competence may apply one.
Can the front strip and the back yard be done on one visit?
Yes, and they are usually quoted as one job with two surfaces. They rarely behave the same way, though. The front takes road grit, tyre scuff and whatever walks off the pavement, and it dries quickly because it is open. The back is shaded, wetter and mostly biological growth, so it wants dwell time rather than pressure. If the front is block and the back is a mixture, re sanding applies to one of them and not to the other.
Will the water end up in next door's yard?
Not if the job is set up properly, and it is a fair thing to ask before anyone starts. We work with the fall of the yard rather than against it, keep the rotary head away from the boundary, and finish the last course along a shared wall with a lance held low and shallow. The slurry is swept and vacuumed up rather than pushed anywhere at all. If a wall is low and somebody has washing out, we would sooner knock and move the hour than apologise later.
Do you cover the whole of Hyson Green?
Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does driveway & patio cleaning cost in Hyson Green?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the square metreage, the surface, and whether you want re-sanding or sealing afterwards. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start driveway & patio cleaning in Hyson Green?
Within a week or two from March onwards, and we watch the forecast rather than book a hard date in winter. On-street only, and tight, and we group Hyson Green with Radford, New Basford and Sherwood on the rota.
