Gutter Cleaning for Forest Fields homes

Two different fills in one area. Houses facing the Forest and the boulevard take whole leaves and seed off mature street trees; the streets behind them have almost no trees, and what packs those gutters is moss and grit off old clay tiles.

What is in the gutter here depends on how far you are from the Forest. The frontages looking onto the recreation ground and the boulevard sit under mature street trees, so their front runs take whole leaves in autumn and seed and blossom debris in early summer, and the mat forms at the outlet within a season. Turn into the grid behind and the trees stop. Those gutters fill instead with moss washed off old clay tiles and the grit that comes with it, which is heavier, sits as silt along the whole length rather than gathering at the corners, and does not shift in the first heavy rain. The two want different timing. Leaves want late autumn once the trees are bare. Moss and silt are a year round problem and are worth doing whenever.

Forest Fields sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. On the practical side: Parking is on-street with cars nose to tail both sides, and the shared back entries are often the easier way in with equipment. Goose Fair week closes the Forest and fills the streets around it, so we shift those bookings rather than arriving late.

What we run into on Forest Fields gutter cleaning jobs

Roof moss is what people underestimate on these terraces. Old clay tiles hold moisture and a shaded pitch grows a thick cushion of it, and every spell of hard rain washes a proportion off the tiles straight into the gutter, where it packs down behind the outlet as a dense wet mat rather than floating on the water. It comes up the vacuum in lumps rather than as loose debris, and you can usually see the same material lying on the ground under the downpipe shoe. What it means in practice is that a gutter on this stock can be full with no tree anywhere near it, which is the reason most people give for not booking one.

How a Forest Fields gutter cleaning job actually runs

The front of these houses is worked off a public footway, and that sets the timing. Gregory Boulevard and the streets running off it carry people to the Forest tram stop and the recreation ground all day, so front elevations are done early, the hose and the pole stay tight to the wall, and nothing is left lying across a pavement while we move the van. The back is the slower half. A back addition has its own lower gutter and the main run sits above a yard the width of a room, reached either through a shared entry or through the house, so we need to know before the day which of the two is open and whether the entry gate is locked. Three storey frontages nearer the Forest sit at the upper end of what a ground based vacuum reaches, and we say so at the quote rather than discovering it on the morning. Landlord bookings are the other pattern. A house in multiple occupation gets inspected, and a blocked gutter shows up inside as a damp patch in a room somebody is paying rent for, so footage is what gets it dealt with rather than argued over.

Who books it here

Most of the terraces are let room by room, so the communal parts belong to nobody in particular. Hallways, stair carpets and shared kitchens carry the whole house while individual rooms stay reasonable, and a clean booked for one tenant rarely covers the parts that actually need it.

We run Forest Fields on the same round as Hyson Green, New Basford and Radford.

What we check on every Forest Fields job

The camera earns its place on this stock more than anywhere. Nobody in a terrace can see their own gutter, and in a house let room by room nobody living there has any reason to look. The camera goes on the pole head and we film the whole run before starting, so you see the silt line, the moss packed in behind the outlet and any nesting material in the corner. Then we film it again empty. On these roofs the recurring finds are three: a downpipe shoe silted solid at pavement level, a joint on the back addition where the seal has gone so water has been running down the render instead of into the pipe, and a length that has dropped between brackets and holds standing water at the low point. The first we clear. The other two are a roofer's work, and they get filmed and the stills sent the same day rather than described down the phone.

What the gutter cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The camera: Defects recorded as we find them: standing water, a split joint, a bracket letting go
  • Clearing: Vacuumed from ground level on a carbon fibre pole, up to three storeys
  • The camera: A look along every run before anything starts, so you know what is actually in there
  • Washing and extras: Downpipe unblocking, rodded and then flushed through to prove it

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full gutter cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Forest Fields property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What gutter cleaning costs in Forest Fields

Gutter clearing by ground based vacuum, at typical UK market rates by property type. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£70 to £120

Typical per visit in Forest Fields. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per visit
Bungalow or single storey£45 to £75
Terraced house£55 to £90
Semi-detached£70 to £120
Detached£100 to £180
Three storey or townhouse£140 to £220
Priced by the metre instead£4 to £12 per metre

Gutters are quoted per visit, so a semi-detached cleared twice a year sits at roughly £140 to £240 a year. If a quote looks high against that, ask for the per metre rate instead: it shows whether the price was worked out from your actual run of guttering or from a glance at the front of the house.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Conservatory gutter added to a visit£30 to £50
Downpipe unblocked, per pipe£20 to £60
External gutter wash, fascias and soffits£40 to £80
Gutter guards supplied and fitted, by others£200 to £500

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

There are no trees on my street. Do my gutters still need doing?

Yes, and this is the most common misunderstanding we hear on these streets. Trees are one source of gutter debris and on this stock they are not the main one. Moss shed off an old clay roof, roofing grit and windblown silt fill a run perfectly well on a street with nothing growing on it at all. The camera settles the argument in a couple of minutes, because we film the run before touching it and you see what is in there.

The overflow only happens over the front bay. Where is the blockage?

Usually at the outlet or in the downpipe rather than along the run itself. Water finds the lowest point and goes over the front edge there, so the symptom you can see is often several feet from the cause. On a front elevation the pipe drops beside the bay to a gully at pavement level, and the shoe at the bottom silts up out of sight. We check the flow and clear that shoe as part of the job.

I rent a room here. Can I get the gutters done?

You can book it, but you should not be paying for it. Guttering is part of the landlord's repairing responsibility rather than a tenant's, so the useful thing is to report it in writing and send the evidence. We are happy to send before and after stills to whoever is paying, including a letting agent or a managing agent, and a short clip of a packed run tends to move a repair along faster than a description of a damp patch on a bedroom wall.

Can you reach the back if the entry is locked and nobody is in?

Sometimes, and it is worth checking before the day rather than on it. Where the entry is gated we need a code, a key or somebody at home to open it. The alternative is bringing the pole through the house, which needs a hallway that is clear and somebody willing to have it done. If neither is available we do the front, tell you the back is outstanding and put it in the diary for a day when access has been arranged.

Do you cover the whole of Forest Fields?

Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Forest Fields?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of storeys, the length of the run rather than the house type, and whether the downpipes are blocked as well. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start gutter cleaning in Forest Fields?

Within a week or two, longer through October and November when everything comes down at once. Parking is on-street with cars nose to tail both sides, and the shared back entries are often the easier way in with equipment, and we group Forest Fields with Hyson Green, New Basford and Radford on the rota.
