Window Cleaning for Sherwood Rise homes

The slope decides this one. A villa showing two storeys to the road shows three to the garden behind it, so the rear elevation is a pole job from ground that falls away, and the ground floor flat looks into a light well.

The slope decides how this works. A villa built into the hill presents two storeys to the road and three to the garden behind it, so the rear elevation is the taller one and the ground under it falls away. That rules out ladders and makes it a water fed pole job worked from the flattest patch of garden we can find. At the front, the original sashes are the interesting part. A good number have been painted shut over the years, and plenty are in flats where the tenant has never had one open, so the frame, the sill and the little slots in the bottom of it are where the work is rather than the pane itself.

Sherwood Rise sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly large three storey Victorian villas and bay fronted semis on the slope, most of them long since divided into self contained flats, with a run of smaller terraces at the lower end, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Sherwood Rise window cleaning jobs

The stair window is the one that never gets done. A converted villa usually has a tall window on the half landing, well above head height from the flight below it, and it belongs to the building and not to any of the flats. It is the only daylight the common hall gets, so a winter of film on it makes the whole staircase feel darker than it should. From outside it is a straightforward pole job. From inside it needs somebody to let us in and a proper platform rather than a step balanced across a stair, so it goes on the common parts quote rather than being squeezed into a flat booking.

How a Sherwood Rise window cleaning job actually runs

Getting round the back is most of the job here. Rear elevations on this slope stand above a garden that falls away, and the route to them is a side passage with a gate that is usually locked, a shared path past a ground floor flat's private yard, or through the building itself. So we need to know before the visit who holds the gate key and whether anybody has to be in to open it. Carrying poles and hose through a communal hall past several front doors is the option worth avoiding, for reasons the neighbours will explain. Ground conditions count as well. A water fed pole wants level footing, and a garden that steps down in terraces with a bin store, a shed and a soft border under the windows offers less of that than you would expect. Outsides can be done with nobody home once access is sorted, which is why most rounds here run on a fixed cycle. Insides are booked separately, because somebody has to open up.

Who books it here

The local reference points are Mansfield Road on the climb out of town, the Rock Cemetery and Forest Road East, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

We run Sherwood Rise on the same round as Carrington, Forest Fields and New Basford.

What we check on every Sherwood Rise job

The communal front door is the pane that tells on everybody. A villa converted into flats usually keeps a glazed panel or a fanlight above the door, it is the first thing a visitor stands in front of, and because it belongs to the building rather than to any one flat, nobody books it. Hands, post, weather and the entry panel beside it leave their marks at the same height, so it dulls faster than anything upstairs. Round the back the problem is different. The elevation over the garden sits in shade under mature trees for much of the year, so frames and rubber gaskets grow a green film that a squeegee lifts off the glass and leaves sitting on the frame. It returns sooner than the road side does, and that side wants a shorter cycle, which is worth agreeing when you book.

What the window cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Also: Hard water spotting treated as limescale rather than scrubbed
  • Also: Green algae on north-facing frames
  • Also: Commercial frontages on a weekly or fortnightly rota
  • Exterior: Water-fed pole system using purified water, reaching up to four storeys

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full window cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What window cleaning costs in Sherwood Rise

Exterior glass on a rota. Interiors are charged separately and need access. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£15 to £28

Typical per visit in Sherwood Rise. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per visit
Terraced house£12 to £20
Semi-detached£15 to £28
Detached£25 to £45
Interiors, added to a visitRoughly half again
Commercial frontageQuoted on frequency

The first clean of glass that has been left costs more than the ones after it, which is why a rota works out cheaper than an annual rescue.

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Window Cleaningin Sherwood Rise

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Our sashes have been painted shut. Can you still do the insides?

Yes, from inside the room, and the honest answer is that we clean the glass and the parts of the frame we can reach and tell you what we cannot. A sash painted shut cannot be cleaned at its meeting rail or along the top of the lower pane, and forcing one splits old timber and paint. We photograph what is unreachable so the landlord or the freeholder can decide about having them eased, which is a joiner's job.

Do you clean the light well at the front?

We can, and it usually needs it more than the window above it does. The sunken area in front of a lower ground floor flat collects leaves off the street, grit washed down the slope and whatever blows in, and because it sits below pavement level nothing clears it on its own. Say so when you book. It is a separate task with its own bags and tools, not something we can add on the day.

How often should the outsides be done?

A regular cycle beats an occasional big clean, particularly on the garden side where shade and trees leave a film on the frames and gaskets. Roughly seasonal suits the front of most flats, and the rear often wants doing more frequently than that. What decides it is the elevation rather than the calendar: glass facing a busy road collects traffic film, glass under a tree collects sap and algae. We will tell you which yours is after a first visit.

It rained the day after. Do you come back?

Rain by itself does not undo a proper clean. What marks glass is what runs off the frame and the sill above it, so a first visit after a long gap can show streaks while dirt is still washing out of old timber and pointing, and that settles down after a cycle or two. If the glass genuinely looks unfinished within a couple of days of a visit, tell us and we will put it right on the next round rather than debate the weather.

Do you cover the whole of Sherwood Rise?

Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does window cleaning cost in Sherwood Rise?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of windows, how many storeys, and whether interiors are included with the exterior rota. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start window cleaning in Sherwood Rise?

Within a fortnight to join the rota, and the first clean of neglected glass takes longer than the ones after it. The hill is the problem, and we group Sherwood Rise with Carrington, Forest Fields and New Basford on the rota.
