Window Cleaning for Carrington homes
Original openings with replacement units dropped into them, so a front is mostly frame, gasket and weep hole around a small amount of glass. On an identical row, a front that has been done and one that has not are obvious together.
Most of the openings are still the size they were built, with replacement units dropped into them, so a front here is a lot of frame and gasket around a fairly small amount of glass. That is where the work actually is. The rubber channel holds grit, the weep holes cut through the bottom of the frame block up and hold water against the seal, and the vent in the head of the frame fills with the same. Clean only the glass on a house like this and what you notice from a chair inside is a dirty edge running all the way round. The row being identical is the other local feature: a front that has been done and one that has not are obvious side by side from across the street.
Carrington sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly small two up two down cottages built to one pattern in short straight streets from the 1830s, many with painted brick fronts, and larger bay fronted houses on the roads climbing away, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Carrington window cleaning jobs
Sills tell you which side of the house you are standing on. At the front, at hand height on a narrow footway, they collect road grit, hands, gloves and shopping bags put down while somebody hunts for a key, plus a dark line along the leading edge that is traffic film rather than soil. Painted stone gets washed rather than scraped, and where the paint has failed the stone soaks up water and stays dark long after everything else has dried, which is worth saying out loud so nobody assumes we skipped it. Round the back, over a small yard, the same sill is mostly moss and whatever has blown into the corner and stayed.
How a Carrington window cleaning job actually runs
The back of a house here is the awkward half. There is no gate from the street on most of these rows, so reaching the rear windows means either going through the house or through a shared entry where the row has one, and that decides how the round works. Fronts can be done whether or not anybody is in, and they get done on the day we say. Backs need somebody home, a key arrangement or an unbolted gate, and the bolt on a yard gate is on the inside, which is exactly the problem. So we set the round up with the fronts on a regular cycle and the backs on dates we confirm with you beforehand, rather than turning up hopefully and leaving half a house done. The yard itself limits what can be used back there. It is a small space, often with an old brick store or an outhouse taking up part of it, and a pole has to be raised in whatever gap is left, which is why a back elevation sometimes takes longer than a front twice its size.
Who books it here
The local reference points are the Mansfield Road shops, Watcombe Circus and the City Hospital on Hucknall Road, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
We run Carrington on the same round as Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields.
What we check on every Carrington job
The glass in and around the front door is where a house here gets judged from the pavement, and it is the panel most often skipped. The letter plate leaves a dark smear on the inside of the door and a fan of grey marks below it on the outside, from hands and from post being pushed through in the wet. A brass knocker or handle that has not been touched with anything but hands for years carries a green bloom in its detail that lifts with a soft brush rather than with metal polish. Above that, a fanlight over the door collects cobweb behind the glazing bars and holds it, because it never opens and nobody inside can reach it. All three take a few minutes and change the look of a frontage more than the main window does.
What the window cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Exterior: No ladders, so no access needed through the house in most cases
- Also: Hard water spotting treated as limescale rather than scrubbed
- Interior: Frame, sill and track dusted and vacuumed first, so you are not making mud
- Also: Commercial frontages on a weekly or fortnightly rota
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full window cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What window cleaning costs in Carrington
Exterior glass on a rota. Interiors are charged separately and need access. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£15 to £28
Typical per visit in Carrington. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per visit |
|---|---|
| Terraced house | £12 to £20 |
| Semi-detached | £15 to £28 |
| Detached | £25 to £45 |
| Interiors, added to a visit | Roughly half again |
| Commercial frontage | Quoted on frequency |
The first clean of glass that has been left costs more than the ones after it, which is why a rota works out cheaper than an annual rescue.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Conservatory roof | Quoted after seeing it |
| First clean of neglected glass | Higher than the rota price |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Can you do the fronts when cars are parked hard against the wall?
Usually, because the reach comes off the footway and the pole goes up in front of the wall rather than across a vehicle. What defeats us is a van parked tight to the house on a narrow pavement with nowhere to stand, and on these streets that does happen. If a front is blocked we clean everything else, tell you which windows we could not reach, and pick them up next time rather than charging you for glass we did not touch.
How often do the fronts need doing compared with the backs?
More often, and on the streets nearest the main road roughly twice as often. A front elevation close to through traffic picks up a film that dries to a grey haze, and in winter it shows within weeks. The backs face a yard, get less weather and far less passing traffic, and hold their finish much longer. Plenty of people here keep the fronts on a short rota and have the whole house done less frequently, which is a sensible way to do it.
There is a haze between the panes that will not come off. Can you sort it?
No, and it is important to know why rather than to keep paying somebody to try. That haze is on the inside faces of a sealed unit whose seal has failed, so moisture has got into the cavity and left a mineral bloom where it dried. There is no way in without breaking the unit. The glass has to be replaced, which is a glazier rather than a cleaner, and the frame itself is usually perfectly sound. We photograph it so you can show somebody the affected pane.
Do you do the insides as well as the outsides?
Yes, by arrangement, and it works best as a separate booking rather than as an add on to the round, since it needs access to every room. In houses this size the practical limit is furniture. Beds and wardrobes stand under windows in small bedrooms and we will not shift heavy furniture to reach glass. Take the nets down beforehand if you have them, and tell us about any window that has been painted shut so we are not forcing anything.
Do you cover the whole of Carrington?
Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does window cleaning cost in Carrington?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of windows, how many storeys, and whether interiors are included with the exterior rota. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start window cleaning in Carrington?
Within a fortnight to join the rota, and the first clean of neglected glass takes longer than the ones after it. Streets inside the old grid are short, narrow and parked both sides with no drives at all, so we stop where it is legal and carry in, and we group Carrington with Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields on the rota.
