Driveway & Patio Cleaning for Long Eaton homes

Most of these houses have no drive at all. The job is a shaded brick back yard falling to one gully, and a shared passage too narrow for a rotary head where the slurry runs onto the neighbour's half unless it is lifted.

There is no drive on most of these streets, and that is the starting point rather than a complication. What exists instead is a back yard: brick paved or laid in old quarry paviours, walled on three sides, falling to one gully in a corner, and in shade for most of the day behind the house. A surface that never takes direct sun grows a far heavier algal film than an open drive does, and it grows it evenly, so nobody notices how dark a yard has become until one corner of it is cleaned. Past the yard gate is a passage belonging to two households, swept by neither, and it is the part that decides how long the job takes.

Long Eaton sits in NG10, under Erewash Borough Council. Regular domestic cleaning in the terraces and semis is the base, much of it while the house is empty because the London and Derby trains take people out early. Tenancy turnarounds run steadily through the year rather than in a summer block. Office and small premises contracts come from the town centre and the trade units.

What we run into on Long Eaton driveway & patio cleaning jobs

Old yard brick is what to be careful with. Blue engineering paviours and Victorian quarry brick were bedded and pointed in lime mortar, and lime is soft: full pressure through a lance opens the joint faster than it lifts the algae, and once the joints are empty the bricks begin to move under a wheeled bin. Pressure comes well down and the rotary head does the open area, except that a passage two shoulders wide will not take a rotary head at all. That is why the passage is the slow half of the job and the yard is the quick one.

How a Long Eaton driveway & patio cleaning job actually runs

Water gets sorted out before a date is fixed. A good number of these yards have no outside tap, and where one exists it is on the far side of a passage gate somebody else keeps bolted, so we bring water and need somewhere to stand within reach of a hose run that has to cross a footway. That run is matted and covered where it crosses, because a pavement is not a driveway and people are walking on it. A yard is generally one visit and a passage often takes a second pass, since nothing in a passage can be reached with a rotary head and all of it is worked at close quarters. Spring is the right time, once the winter growth has finished establishing and before anybody wants to sit out, and it wants two or three dry days afterwards if the joints are being refilled. Bins have to come out of the yard for the day, which on a street with no frontage means agreeing beforehand where they are going to stand.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly long rows of late Victorian terraces put up for the lace and furniture workforce, interwar and postwar semis on the edges, and apartments carved out of former mill floors near the centre, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Long Eaton on the same round as Sandiacre, Toton and Attenborough.

What we check on every Long Eaton job

The wall is where a yard job gets judged, not the floor. A brick yard enclosed on three sides throws everything back at itself, so the splash line up the boundary and up the back of the house carries the same black film as the paving, in a band about knee high, and cleaning the ground while leaving that band gives you an obvious tidemark that reads as work half finished. It also has to be done carefully. The damp proof course sits a couple of courses above the yard surface, and driving water at or below that line pushes it into solid brickwork with nothing behind it to stop it. So the wall goes at reduced pressure with a detergent and dwell time, worked downwards, and the bottom courses are cleaned by hand at close range rather than blasted, which is slower and is the right way round.

What the driveway & patio cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Putting it back: Kiln-dried sand brushed into block paving joints once the surface has dried
  • The clean: The run-off checked before we leave, not after somebody complains
  • The clean: Slurry swept and vacuumed up rather than flushed into the nearest gully or run onto next door's garden
  • The clean: Oil, tyre scuff and leaf tannin staining worked separately, since they are chemistry problems rather than soil

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full driveway & patio cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What driveway & patio cleaning costs in Long Eaton

Cleaning priced by the square metre at typical UK rates, with a minimum charge on small jobs. Re-sanding and sealing are quoted separately. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£100 to £200

Typical cost in Long Eaton. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Cleaning, per square metre£3 to £6
Minimum charge on a small jobUsually billed as a 30 m² minimum
Patio, up to 20 m²£90 to £160
Single drive, 30 to 40 m²£100 to £200
Double drive, 50 to 70 m²£150 to £280
Large drive, 90 m² and over£225 to £350

The minimum charge is what catches people out. A 15 m² patio is usually billed as 30 m², so at £3 to £6 per square metre it costs the same £90 to £180 as a patio twice the size. Cleaning a patio and a path in the same visit spreads that minimum across more ground.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Block paving re-sanding, per m²£1.50 to £3
Sealing, on a separate dry visit, per m²£4 to £10
Clean and seal together, single drive£200 to £300
Heavy moss, weed or oil pre-treatment, per m²£2 to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Where does all the dirty water go in a yard like this?

Not down the gully, which is the one thing that really matters here. A gully in the corner of a yard of this age is usually trapped and taking the kitchen waste as well as the rain, so it runs to the foul sewer, and a season of silt and dead algae washed into it will block it. The slurry is squeegeed to one side, lifted and taken away, and the gully goes under a cover before anything starts.

The passage is shared with next door. Do we need to ask them?

It is worth doing, and not only out of courtesy. A passage falls one way or the other, so water and slurry off your half will cross theirs, and the gate at the street end normally has to stand open for the hose. Telling them the day before costs nothing. If they want their half done at the same time it is quicker for us and better value for both of you than two separate visits.

Can a machine that size even get into a back yard?

The rotary head goes through a standard yard gate, and that is what does the open area evenly. The passage is the part that cannot take one, so it becomes lance work at reduced pressure held at a shallow angle, and it is slow for the area it covers. If the only way in is through the house we would rather know when quoting, because it changes the protection, the time on site and occasionally whether the job is worth doing.

There is no drive. Is a yard worth having done at all?

It is usually the surface that gains most, because a yard in permanent shade grows a heavier and more slippery film than an open drive ever does and nobody watches it happen. The winter footing is the real return rather than how it looks. What it does not buy is permanence: shade is why it grew and the shade is still there, so a yard like this wants doing rather more often than a sunny patio does.

Do you cover the whole of Long Eaton?

Yes, all of NG10 and the surrounding streets, under Erewash Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does driveway & patio cleaning cost in Long Eaton?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the square metreage, the surface, and whether you want re-sanding or sealing afterwards. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start driveway & patio cleaning in Long Eaton?

Within a week or two from March onwards, and we watch the forecast rather than book a hard date in winter. Town centre premises are reached off the back service lanes rather than the shop front, and loading restrictions set the timing there, and we group Long Eaton with Sandiacre, Toton and Attenborough on the rota.
