How do I tell whether ours is the permeable sort?
Look for three things. Wider joints with a grey angular grit in them rather than fine buff sand. No gully or channel taking water off the drive to the road, because it is meant to take its own. And a house or a front garden laid since around 2008, which is when draining a new front surface to the highway stopped being the default. If you are still not sure, send a close photograph of the joints and we will tell you before quoting.
Can it be sealed once it is clean?
Not if it is permeable. A sealer works by closing the surface, and closing the surface of paving whose whole purpose is to let water through defeats it and can push run off onto the footway instead. On ordinary block paving and on concrete, sealing is worth discussing as a separate visit on a surface that is dry all the way through, never on the same day as the wash. We would rather turn the extra work down than seal the wrong drive.
Which sand goes back into ours?
Whatever the surface was built with, and the two are not interchangeable. Standard block paving takes fine kiln dried sand brushed in and worked down in stages until the joints stop taking it. Permeable paving takes the angular grit it was laid with, because that is what keeps water moving through the joint, and filling one with kiln dried sand blinds it and stops it draining. If nobody knows which you have, we look at the joint width and the grain before we quote rather than afterwards.
Can the back patio be done on the same visit as the drive?
Usually yes, and the limit is the route rather than the area. On these plots the only way to the rear with a machine and a hose is the gap between the houses, so we need that clear and the gate wide enough, and the hose has a working length that decides where the van can stand. Say at the booking what the back is laid with as well, because riven slabs, porcelain and concrete each take a different pressure from a block drive.
