Oven Cleaning for Bilborough homes

Almost every kitchen on this stock takes a single oven six hundred millimetres wide, with the grill element in the roof of the main cavity rather than in a compartment of its own. That roof is the surface a general clean never reaches.

The appliance is nearly always a single, sized to the gap the original kitchen left, and its grill sits in the roof of the main cavity instead of in a compartment of its own. That one difference decides the job. Grilling throws fat straight upwards onto the element and the enamel around it, where it bakes at a far higher temperature than roasting ever reaches, so the roof carries hard black carbon while the floor and the sides carry brown film. A wipe round cannot get past a fixed element, and an element cannot be lifted out and soaked, so the roof is the surface that has been accumulating since the day the appliance went in. It is also what smokes the next time you turn the oven on.

Bilborough sits in NG8, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly interwar and postwar estate housing, largely semis, with consistent room sizes and layouts, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Bilborough oven cleaning jobs

Underneath the appliance is the find. A built under single stands on its own feet inside a six hundred housing, held at the front by two screws through the frame, and the floor of that housing has never been seen. What is on it is a hard biscuit of spilled fat, sugar and crumb, set in a layer about the thickness of a coin, with the drilled ventilation holes in the housing floor closed up solid. It comes off with a scraper rather than a cloth, and the appliance has to come forward on its feet to reach it. The plinth board below clips out and hides the same thing along its back edge.

How a Bilborough oven cleaning job actually runs

The appliance has to be stone cold before anything caustic goes near it, which means it has not been used since the previous evening, so these are morning bookings for a household that cooks at night and afternoon ones for one that does not. Two hours is the honest figure for a single oven taken apart properly, and most of that is dwell time rather than effort, which is the argument for putting the hob, the extractor canopy and the microwave on the same visit. Each is priced as its own item, but one dwells while another is being stripped, so three together take nothing like three separate visits. Parking is rarely the problem on these streets, and the walk to the kitchen is short enough that racks, runners, trays and grill pan go out to the tank in one trip. What we ask for is the kitchen to ourselves for the visit, the floor clear, and pets and children kept out of the room while product is sitting in the cavity. If an engineer is due to look at the oven, have that done before rather than after, because a repair puts fingerprints and swarf back onto everything.

Who books it here

On the practical side: Good, with on-street parking and generous road widths.

We run Bilborough on the same round as Wollaton, Aspley and Bulwell.

What we check on every Bilborough job

Where the hob goes on the same visit, the edge of the worktop cut out is the thing to look at before any water is used. The cut out is a rectangle taken out of a laminate worktop with a chipboard core, and the only thing keeping water out of that core is a bead of sealant or the lip of the hob frame sitting on it. On a kitchen of this age one corner has usually failed, the core has drawn water, and the laminate above it has lifted into a soft ridge you can press with a thumb. Flooding that with degreaser finishes it. So the perimeter is cleaned damp rather than wet, the pan supports and burner caps are soaked away from the appliance, and the swelling is photographed and pointed out at the start rather than discovered at the end. The joint where the worktop meets the upstand behind the hob goes the same way, since that is where every boil over runs to and sits.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • How the job is left: The housing the oven sits in, and the plinth below it
  • How the job is left: Floor and worktop protected before anything is opened or applied
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Metal mesh filters degreased in solution, which is the part holding most of the grease
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Gas hobs: burner caps, crowns, pan supports and the tray underneath, all soaked separately

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Bilborough

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Bilborough. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Ours has the grill inside the oven. Is that a single or a double?

A single, and it is priced as one. A separate grill compartment above the main cavity means two doors, two sets of runners and two lots of soaking, which is what makes a double a double. Yours has one cavity with the grill element mounted in the roof of it. That takes less time overall, but the roof itself takes longer than any other surface in the appliance, because grilling bakes fat onto it at a temperature roasting never reaches.

Can the racks and trays soak in our sink?

No, and we would rather not ask. Kitchens on these houses have one short worktop run and a single drainer, and that is the surface you will want while we are there. Racks, runners, trays and the grill pan go out to a heated tank in the van and come back rinsed. The floor in front of the cooker is sheeted before anything is opened, so the only thing we need from you is the room itself.

Is the oven usable straight after you finish?

Yes. Everything is rinsed until the water comes off clean, which is the slow part of the job and the reason a proper clean does not smell on first heat. If an oven smokes the first time it is used afterwards, something has been left in it. Reassembly gets checked as well: runners the right way round, the glass back in the right order, and the door closing onto the seal along its whole length rather than at the top only.

There is a rough panel at the back of the oven. Does that get cleaned?

Not with product, no. A rough, matt, slightly gritty panel is a catalytic liner, and it is designed to burn soil off at temperature rather than be cleaned chemically. Caustic destroys the coating and scrubbing wears it away, and neither can be undone afterwards. We clean everything around it and tell you which panels they are, so you know why one surface looks different from the rest once we have finished.

Do you cover the whole of Bilborough?

Yes, all of NG8 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Bilborough?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Bilborough?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. Good, with on-street parking and generous road widths, and we group Bilborough with Wollaton, Aspley and Bulwell on the rota.
