Oven Cleaning for Hyson Green homes

Three kitchens in a house that was built with one, and not one of the three rooms was designed to cook in. The cooker is landlord stock wedged into a gap between base units, and no worktop free to put a set of racks down.

Ovens in Hyson Green are a landlord's fitting rather than a cook's appliance, bought to fill a gap in a run of units. Turning one terrace into three flats means three kitchens in a house built with one, and none of the three rooms was designed for the job. What we usually find is a slot in freestanding cooker, fifty or sixty centimetres wide, standing between two base units with a finger of clearance either side, or a single built under oven with a separate four ring hob above it. Nobody has taken the door apart since it went in, because a tenancy runs a year and the oven is nobody's job in year one.

Hyson Green sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly tightly packed Victorian terraces, many converted to flats, with tram stops threaded through the middle of it, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Hyson Green oven cleaning jobs

Staging is the real problem in a kitchen this size. The room is usually a former back bedroom or the old scullery, and the run of worktop is short enough that the kettle, the microwave and the drainer have already taken it. There is nowhere to stand a soaking rack, a hot grill pan and two door panes. So we bring a folding table and lay protection on the floor rather than taking over the only surface you have, and the door glass comes out and goes down flat instead of leaning against a wall where a foot finds it. In a room three paces across, that is the difference between a finished job and a chipped pane.

How a Hyson Green oven cleaning job actually runs

The removable parts of an oven normally go into a heated tank of solution in the van, and that is the step this area quietly complicates. There is nothing to park on, so the van may be several streets away and the tank might as well be in another postcode. We work round it by carrying a portable tank up with the kit and soaking in the flat itself, which is slower but keeps everything in one place and means a set of greasy racks is not walked down a stair four households use. Ask for a morning slot where you can, because the soak is the longest part of the job and an afternoon start pushes reassembly into the evening. Where a landlord holds more than one flat in the same building, put every oven on one visit. The tank goes up the stairs once, one set of parts sits in solution while the next cavity is being treated, and a single access arrangement covers the lot instead of three doorstep negotiations on three different days.

Who books it here

On the practical side: On-street only, and tight. The tram runs down Radford Road so loading is restricted in places. We bring what we need in one trip rather than running back to the van.

We run Hyson Green on the same round as Radford, New Basford and Sherwood.

What we check on every Hyson Green job

The soil pattern in these flats runs top down rather than bottom up, and it tells you how the kitchen actually gets used. In a small flat the grill does more work than the oven, because it is quicker for one or two people, so the heaviest carbon sits on the roof of the cavity, on the grill element and across the pan and its runners rather than on the floor beneath a roasting tin. That changes the order of work: the roof is treated first and given the longest dwell, and the runners come out to soak with the racks instead of being wiped where they sit. The second find is the housing. A built under oven in a conversion sits in a carcass cut on site to fit a wall that was never square, so there are gaps at the sides packed with years of crumbs and a plinth that lifts out and has never once been off. Both of those get done.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • How the job is left: Usable straight away, with no waiting period and no smell on first heat
  • The oven itself: Fan cover and back plate removed where the model allows, and the housing behind it degreased
  • The oven itself: Door seal cleaned around rather than soaked, because a saturated seal perishes
  • The oven itself: Interior light lens, fascia, controls and door handle

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Hyson Green

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Hyson Green. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

The cooker cannot be pulled out. Does that change anything?

It changes what you get down the sides rather than what you get inside the oven. A freestanding cooker wedged into a gap with a centimetre either side cannot be drawn forward without lifting it, and a gas one sits on a bayonet fitting we do not disconnect. We clean the cavity, the door and the top in full, reach as far down each flank as the gap allows, and tell you plainly what is still behind it rather than implying we got there.

Will the flat smell of it while you work?

Less than people expect, though the ventilation is worth planning. Many of these kitchens borrow their daylight from the next room and have one small opening or none at all, so we work with the flat door shut, the window open where there is one, and the extractor running. Everything is rinsed until the water comes off clean, which is what stops the first heat smoking and is the usual reason a smell lingers for days afterwards.

Three flats in the building all need theirs doing. Is one visit realistic?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to buy it. Dwell time is what an oven clean is largely made of, so while one cavity sits under product we are stripping the next, and three appliances in a day take far less than three separate visits ever would. What it needs is one person arranging access to all three doors at agreed times. Three tenants each answering for themselves is how a full day turns into a wasted one.

The landlord says the oven is past cleaning. Is that likely?

Occasionally true and usually not. Carbon comes off with the right product and enough time however thick it is, though a badly neglected one needs two applications and a longer visit, so leaving it costs more rather than less. What does not come back is damage: chipped or crazed enamel, a cracked inner pane, a perished door seal, or rust where the enamel has been scratched through. We photograph those before starting so you can see which you are looking at.

Do you cover the whole of Hyson Green?

Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Hyson Green?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Hyson Green?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. On-street only, and tight, and we group Hyson Green with Radford, New Basford and Sherwood on the rota.
