Window Cleaning for Gedling homes

Open ground on two sides means wind blown dust and a reliable supply of webbing in the frame corners rather than traffic film. On the newer houses the first clean also has mortar splash and label residue to deal with.

What dirties glass here is open ground rather than traffic. Properties on the edges look out over the park, the woods and the fields past them, and what lands on the windows is wind blown dust, pollen and seed rather than the oily film a main road leaves behind. It rinses off more readily, which is the good news, and it arrives in quantity after a dry spell or a grass cut. Spiders are the other consequence of a green boundary. External frame corners and the undersides of sills carry webbing again within weeks of being cleared, and by late summer there is enough of it to see from indoors. The rota is set by the season rather than by a fixed number of weeks.

Gedling sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly interwar and postwar semis on the streets off Arnold Lane and Shelford Road, a small older core around the church, and newer estate housing built on the reclaimed colliery ground, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Gedling window cleaning jobs

On the newer houses the first clean is a different job from every clean after it. New glass leaves a build site with mortar splash, a haze of cement dust that rain has run down the pane, and adhesive residue where the manufacturer's labels sat, and none of that comes off in a normal wash. It has to be soaked and eased away rather than scraped, because a blade dragged across a coated or toughened pane leaves fine scratches that are permanent and that catch the light for the rest of the window's life. We tell you when a pane needs that treatment instead of quietly deciding for you.

How a Gedling window cleaning job actually runs

Window rounds here are decided by what happens at the back of the house. The front is straightforward from the pavement or the drive. The rear needs a gate, and on these plots the side passage is often narrow, shared with the neighbour, or blocked by a bin, a bike or a shrub that has grown across it, so we ask for it to be clear on the day rather than climbing over things. Gates that lock need a key left out, a code, or a bolt reachable from the front. Dogs are the other thing to settle in advance, because a dog let into the garden while a pole is being worked overhead is not safe for anyone. Where a loft conversion has added a dormer or a roof window, that gets done from the ground with a pole rather than a ladder up a pitch, and the sloping, stepped gardens rule ladders out in most cases anyway. You get told the round is coming, and if the gate is locked we come back rather than doing the front alone.

Who books it here

The local reference points are Gedling Country Park, All Hallows Church, Gedling House Woods and the Chase Farm estate, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

We run Gedling on the same round as Carlton, Netherfield and Mapperley.

What we check on every Gedling job

The bottom of a uPVC frame has drainage slots cut into its outer face, and they are the reason clean glass can run dirty again within days. Rain getting past the seal is supposed to leave through those slots. They silt up with dust, moss and paint from a repaint, the water then sits in the chamber and eventually comes over the front edge instead, carrying whatever is in there down the pane as a brown streak. The cleaning gets blamed. Clearing them takes a thin tool and a few seconds per window. The sill below deserves the same attention, because the drip groove on its underside is what stops water tracking back to the brickwork, and once that groove is packed the wall under the window starts staining. Frames that have been painted are the worst offenders, because a roller run along the outer face closes every slot at once.

What the window cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Also: Commercial frontages on a weekly or fortnightly rota
  • Also: Green algae on north-facing frames
  • Also: Hard water spotting treated as limescale rather than scrubbed
  • Also: Conservatory roofs and glazing

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full window cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What window cleaning costs in Gedling

Exterior glass on a rota. Interiors are charged separately and need access. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£15 to £28

Typical per visit in Gedling. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per visit
Terraced house£12 to £20
Semi-detached£15 to £28
Detached£25 to £45
Interiors, added to a visitRoughly half again
Commercial frontageQuoted on frequency

The first clean of glass that has been left costs more than the ones after it, which is why a rota works out cheaper than an annual rescue.

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Why does the webbing come back so quickly on the garden side?

Because the spiders are living in the frame rather than passing across it. A uPVC window has a lip beneath the sill and a rebate at the head of the frame, both dry, sheltered and out of the wind, which is what a house spider looks for. Washing the glass does not touch that. We brush out the frame corners and under the sill as part of the clean, which sets it back further than doing the pane alone.

There are specks on our new windows that will not wash off. What are they?

Almost always mortar or render splash from the build, sometimes with the ghost of a label underneath. It is cement, so it has bonded to the glass rather than sitting on top of it, and it needs soaking and patient easing rather than force. It is a one off on a first clean and it repays doing properly, because left alone it is still there in five years, and rushing at it with a blade can mark the glass for good.

Do you need us to be home?

Only for access to the back. If the side gate is unlocked or you leave a key somewhere agreed, the whole job happens without you and you can be at work. What we will not do is charge for a full clean when half of it was unreachable, so if the gate is bolted and nobody is in, we do what is safe, tell you what was missed and come back for the rest at no extra cost.

Why do you clean the frames and sills as well as the glass?

Because dirt left on a frame ends up back on the glass at the first rain. Water runs off the head of the frame and down the sill, and anything sitting there is carried straight across the pane you have just paid to have cleaned. Washing the frame, the sill and the rubber seals is part of a proper clean rather than an addition to it, and it is the difference between glass that stays clear for weeks and glass that streaks in days.

Do you cover the whole of Gedling?

Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does window cleaning cost in Gedling?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of windows, how many storeys, and whether interiors are included with the exterior rota. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start window cleaning in Gedling?

Within a fortnight to join the rota, and the first clean of neglected glass takes longer than the ones after it. Mostly straightforward, because the older semis have a drive or a verge to pull onto, and we group Gedling with Carlton, Netherfield and Mapperley on the rota.
