Oven Cleaning for Clifton Village homes

Heat storage cookers in the larger houses, and freestanding cookers standing on quarry tile and flagstone that will not let an appliance slide. Extraction nearly always recirculates through charcoal, because ducting a hood outside means cutting a hole in an elevation nobody may touch.

Three kinds of cooker turn up in the old village and none of them is the built under double that a modern kitchen runs to. The larger houses in walled grounds often keep a heat storage cooker, which has to be off and stone cold before we arrive, and in a solid walled house that means losing the warmest room for a day and sometimes the hot water along with it. The cottages run to a freestanding cooker sitting on quarry tile or flagstone. The third thing is the extraction above it. Taking a duct out through an external wall means cutting a hole in the face of a protected building, which is not something anybody here gets approval for, so nearly every hood recirculates through charcoal, and charcoal is a replacement part rather than something anybody can wash.

Clifton Village sits in NG11, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly listed and period property round the church and the hall, from small cottages to substantial houses in walled grounds, with twentieth century infill dropped in between them, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Clifton Village oven cleaning jobs

The gap the cooker stands in is the find. On a flagged or quarry tiled floor an appliance cannot simply be slid out, because the feet catch on every edge and the floor was never level, so most of these cookers have been packed up on folded card and have not moved since the day they were delivered. Behind them is a band of soft brown grease on the wall and, underneath, a floor material that is porous and has been taking in fat for years. Stone does not give that back. We degrease what is sitting on the surface, lift the appliance clear rather than drag it, and tell you plainly what has gone into the floor.

How a Clifton Village oven cleaning job actually runs

Booking one of these is largely a question of where the van can stand, because the soak tank travels in it and the removable parts have to reach the tank. Racks, runners, trays and burner parts leave the kitchen wrapped and go out along a narrow walled approach past other people's front doors, so they are bagged rather than carried dripping, and they come back the same way. Where the vehicle is genuinely too far off, we set a tank up on sheeting indoors instead, which needs a square metre of floor nobody minds losing for a couple of hours. Kitchens in the older houses are small and frequently have no run of worktop beside the cooker at all, so we bring a stand of our own rather than resting a hot tray on somebody's timber or on a stone shelf that will take a stain. The other fixed point is heat. A heat storage cooker wants a full day off, a conventional one wants a couple of hours, and neither is something we can improvise on the morning. Rinsing is done from your tap and takes several changes of water.

Who books it here

On the practical side: The lanes are narrow and walled, and most older houses have no drive. We leave the van where there is space and walk the kit in. Say beforehand if the only route to the back is a single door in a boundary wall.

We run Clifton Village on the same round as Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington.

What we check on every Clifton Village job

Look up, at the ceiling directly above the hood. A recirculating canopy blows the air it has pulled off the pan straight back into the room through a grille on its top face, so everything the mesh failed to catch lands on whatever is above, in a band that begins a hand's width off the wall and fades outwards. On a modern painted ceiling that is a wipe and a rinse. Here it is very often limewash, or a joist that has been waxed or simply left bare, and neither takes a degreaser or a wet cloth without the finish leaving with the grease. So it becomes dry work with a sponge, and we are honest about how much of it will lift. The real answer is upstream of the ceiling: a mesh filter degreased regularly and a fresh charcoal cartridge, rather than anything anybody can do to the plaster afterwards.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Extractor canopy inside and out, and the grease trap where there is one
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Microwave interior, roof plate, turntable and door seal
  • How the job is left: Freestanding cookers pulled out where safe, so the sides and the gap are done
  • How the job is left: Usable straight away, with no waiting period and no smell on first heat

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Clifton Village

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Clifton Village. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Oven Cleaningin Clifton Village

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Ours is a heat storage cooker. How long does it have to be off?

A full day before the visit, and stone cold rather than merely warm. There is no way round it. Product applied to hot vitreous enamel damages it, and nothing on the appliance can be taken apart while it is still holding heat. In a house with solid walls that is the kitchen going cold with it, and where the cooker also heats your water you need to plan for that too. We book these into a mild week rather than the middle of winter.

Can you clean the charcoal filter in the cooker hood?

No, and nor can anyone else. Charcoal takes up odour until it is saturated and then stops working, and washing it only makes it wet. It is a cartridge you replace, once or twice a year in a household that cooks properly. What does get cleaned is the metal mesh in front of it, the canopy and the fan housing, which is where the grease actually collects. On a hood that recirculates, that mesh is the only thing between the fat and the room.

There is no worktop next to the cooker. Where do the hot trays go?

On our own stand, over sheeting, which is why we bring one. The alternative is a tray straight out of hot solution onto waxed timber, a limewashed shelf or a stone surface that is porous enough to take the mark permanently, and that is not a trade worth making for the sake of two hours. If the kitchen is genuinely too tight even for a stand, the parts go out to the tank in the van and come back rinsed instead.

Could we have the hood ducted through the wall instead of recirculating?

That is a question for the local planning authority and, on a listed building, for listed building consent, rather than one for us. Cutting a new opening through a wall is a change to the fabric of the building, and it is exactly the sort of change these controls exist to catch. We clean either arrangement. A ducted hood is a canopy, a mesh and a run of duct; a recirculating one is a canopy, a mesh and a cartridge you replace.

Do you cover the whole of Clifton Village?

Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Clifton Village?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Clifton Village?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. The lanes are narrow and walled, and most older houses have no drive, and we group Clifton Village with Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington on the rota.
