Oven Cleaning for Ruddington homes

Three cooker types in one village: slot in singles in the cottage kitchens with no landing space beside them, conventional built unders on the edge estates, and heat storage cookers in the larger houses, which have to be off and stone cold for a day.

The cooker in a village kitchen was chosen by what could be got through the door, and it shows. In the older rows near the centre the kitchen is a single storey rear addition with one short run of worktop, so the appliance is a slot in cooker filling a gap between two units, sink on one side, back door on the other, and nothing between them wide enough to stand a hot rack on. The edge estates are conventional, a built under single or a double set in a tall housing with worktop either side of it. The larger houses in the village are the outlier, running a wide range or a heat storage cooker, and those are booked as a day rather than a morning.

Ruddington sits in NG11, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. The housing here is mostly framework knitters' cottages around the village centre, interwar and modern housing on the edges, several period properties, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Ruddington oven cleaning jobs

Pulling a slot in cooker forward is where most of the soil turns out to be. The gap each side is narrower than a hand, and years of boil over has run down it and set on the raw chipboard edge of the unit rather than on anything designed to be wiped, with more of it up the wall behind and along the top of the skirting. How far the appliance travels out is decided by the flex or the gas bayonet behind it rather than by us. On gas we clean to where it reaches safely, photograph what is still behind it and leave the cooker on its fitting.

How a Ruddington oven cleaning job actually runs

Two practical things settle an oven booking in the village. The first is where the van can stand. Around the green and in the older rows there is no drive and the on street space is taken from early, so a mid morning start once the school traffic has cleared usually gets us in near the door, which matters when soak tubs, a bench and water all have to be carried in. Houses on the edge estates have a drive and none of that applies. The second is that a kitchen in one of these houses is not only a kitchen. It is the route to the yard, the back door and often the only way to the bin, so it is out of use for the visit rather than for an hour of it. Say if that is a problem and we will take the earliest slot of the day. Rinsing is the part people underestimate. A cavity takes six or seven passes with clean water before it stops giving anything back, and in a kitchen whose only tap is over the sink that is a great many trips, so we would rather know in advance.

Who books it here

On the practical side: Village centre parking is limited around the green. Most properties have a drive or nearby on-street space.

We run Ruddington on the same round as West Bridgford, Clifton and Keyworth.

What we check on every Ruddington job

The extractor is the thing we find worst in these kitchens, and it is not the householder's fault. A rear addition often has nowhere sensible to duct through, so the hood over the hob recirculates through a charcoal filter, and charcoal is a replacement item rather than a washable one. Left in for years it stops doing anything at all, and the metal mesh filter below it carries the whole grease load instead. Saturated mesh stops pulling air and starts giving it back, and the giveaway is a row of soft brown spots on the hob directly under the filter frame. In a low kitchen the canopy sits close to head height as well, so the underside gets touched and smeared. The mesh comes out into hot degreaser with the oven parts, the canopy is done inside and out, and we note the make and size of charcoal filter you need rather than guessing at it.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • How the job is left: The housing the oven sits in, and the plinth below it
  • How the job is left: Freestanding cookers pulled out where safe, so the sides and the gap are done
  • How the job is left: Existing damage photographed and pointed out before we start, not after
  • How the job is left: Floor and worktop protected before anything is opened or applied

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Ruddington

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Ruddington. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

The range has to be off? For how long?

Stone cold, which for a heat storage cooker means shutting it down the day before and not relighting it until the evening after we have gone. That is two days without it, and in a house of this age it is usually the kitchen's heat source as well as the cooker, so it wants a mild week rather than a January one. The enamel is softer than a modern oven's too, so nothing abrasive goes near it.

There is no worktop free. Where do the racks go?

Outside the back door, which in these kitchens is a step away. Racks, runners, trays and the inner door glass go into a lidded soak tub standing on the yard, and the threshold, the mat and the route between the two are sheeted first, because caustic solution dripped across a doorway is the one part of this job that cannot be put right afterwards. If it is raining the tub comes just inside the door on a tray.

The kitchen is the way through to the yard. How long is it out of use?

For the visit, which on a single oven is a couple of hours and on a range most of a day. Dwell time is doing the work rather than anybody standing over it, so the middle of the job cannot be hurried. What we can do is take the first slot of the day and keep the coverings and the soak tubs in one corner instead of spread across the room. Tell us at booking if the bin has to come through.

Is there any point cleaning the hood if the filter is finished?

Yes, because the greasy part is the mesh and the canopy rather than the charcoal. The mesh degreases and goes back doing its job properly, and the canopy and the grease channel come up clean. What we cannot do is refresh charcoal, which is replaced on a schedule of roughly six to twelve months in normal use. We note the model so you can order the right one instead of a universal sheet cut to fit.

Do you cover the whole of Ruddington?

Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Ruddington?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Ruddington?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. Village centre parking is limited around the green, and we group Ruddington with West Bridgford, Clifton and Keyworth on the rota.
