House Clearance for Carrington homes
The volume is in the cellar rather than the bedrooms. Steep stone steps with a turn in them, no second way out, and every item carried up by hand to a van standing wherever the street allows it to stand.
Clearing a cottage here is mostly a cellar job with a house attached to it. The property is usually a probate one, lived in by the same household for a very long time, or a void between tenants, and in both cases what accumulated has gone downwards. The cellar sits under the front room, entered off the hall or the back kitchen, down steep stone steps with a turn in them and a head height that makes anything wide a two person carry. Nothing ever came out because taking it out was harder than leaving it. The lofts do the opposite. A small hatch over the landing and a low ridge mean far less is up there than people assume. Estimating this by bedroom count gets it wrong in both directions at once.
Carrington sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. The old part of this was laid out in one go, so a run of houses is genuinely identical: same frontage, same room sizes, same window openings, same box room over the stairs. Learn one and you have learned the row, which is why rounds here run street by street rather than jumping about.
What we run into on Carrington house clearance jobs
Coal dust is the substrate down there. Sixty or seventy years after the last delivery the floor and the lower brickwork on the coal side of a cellar are still black with it, and it lifts and travels onto everything carried up through the house. So it gets bagged at the foot of the steps and comes up sealed rather than in armfuls. Damp is the other constant. Boxes that have stood on a cellar floor have gone soft and drop their bottoms as they are lifted, and textiles, upholstered seating and anything with a chipboard carcass stored down there is generally past reuse. We say so when we quote rather than promising a charity route nothing will take.
How a Carrington house clearance job actually runs
Access is what moves the figure on a street like this, so it is worth being specific about it when you ask for one. There is no drive and no room on the plot, so the van stands wherever it can legally stop, which on some of these streets is outside the door and on others is round the corner. The distance from the door to the tailgate is measured rather than guessed at, because every single item crosses it in somebody's hands. Photographs of the street, the staircase and the cellar steps will get you a firmer number than any description of the house. The footway is the loading bay as well, and it is narrow, so a load goes out in stages rather than being stacked on the pavement while somebody fetches the van. Sequence matters more here than in most places. Voids between tenants are short, so a landlord wants the clearance, the clean and the check in booked as three separate days all at once rather than each one arranged after the last has finished. On a probate clearance the order runs differently: valuation first, then anyone entitled to a keepsake, then us.
Who books it here
On the practical side: Streets inside the old grid are short, narrow and parked both sides with no drives at all, so we stop where it is legal and carry in. If somebody sleeps during the day, say so and we will arrive without ringing the bell.
We run Carrington on the same round as Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields.
What we check on every Carrington job
The cupboard under the stairs is the space nobody has ever emptied. In a cottage laid out like this the run of the staircase gives you either a cellar head or a cupboard off the living room, and where it is a cupboard it goes back much further than the door suggests, because the floor drops away under the last few treads and the ceiling follows the flight down to nothing. It is unlit, so whatever is at the far end has been there since whoever put it there could still reach it. It usually holds the meter, the cut out and the consumer unit, which means it is cleared by hand around the supply rather than dragged out, and the reading is taken and photographed while the door is open. The cellar has the opposite problem. Coal went in through a grate or a chute, which is not a route anything comes out by, so there is no second way out and every item is carried up the steps.
What the house clearance covers
A sample of what is included
- Everything that comes out: Kitchen and cupboard contents, wardrobes and clothing
- Before we leave: Meter readings taken and photographed
- Where it goes: Electricals separated for WEEE recycling rather than crushed into a general load
- Everything that comes out: Fridges, freezers, cookers, washing machines and small appliances
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full house clearance page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Carrington property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.
What house clearance costs in Carrington
UK market ranges for a full house clearance, priced by volume and access rather than by room count. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£400 to £900
Typical per clearance in Carrington. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per clearance |
|---|---|
| Part load: one room, garage or shed | £100 to £250 |
| 1 bed flat | £150 to £400 |
| 2 bed house | £250 to £600 |
| 3 bed house | £400 to £900 |
| 4 bed house | £700 to £1,400 |
| Heavily filled property | £1,000 and up, after a visit |
Access moves a clearance quote more than property size does. The same contents cost 15% to 30% more to shift from a second floor flat with no lift and no parking, which is why photographs of the stairs and the street get you a firmer number than a bedroom count ever will.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Fridge or freezer, per unit | £20 to £95 |
| Mattress, per item | £15 to £40 |
| TVs, monitors and electricals, per item | £5 to £45 |
| Difficult access, no parking or upper floors with no lift | Adds 15% to 30% |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Will a wardrobe come down that staircase?
Some will and some never will, and it is worth knowing which before the day rather than on the landing. A Victorian wardrobe was built to knock down into panels and usually still does, which is how it got up there in the first place. Anything flat packed comes down the way it went up. What defeats a turn this tight is a modern one piece unit, and that gets broken down in the room and taken as timber, with your agreement in writing first.
How do we know the waste goes somewhere legitimate?
By asking for the paperwork before a van is loaded rather than afterwards. Anyone carrying other people's waste in England has to be registered with the Environment Agency, and you can check that registration number yourself on a public register in a couple of minutes. Ask for a transfer note covering the load as well. Having paid somebody to take waste away is not by itself a defence if it later turns up dumped with your address inside it.
The cellar is full and we would rather not go down. Can you quote from photographs?
Photographs of a cellar are almost always too dark to price from, so we would sooner come and look with a light, and it takes a few minutes. What has to be established is not so much the volume as whether anything down there is a separate waste stream: paint, solvents, old fuel, gas cylinders or unlabelled containers of anything. Those have their own routes, cannot go into a general load, and are quoted as what they are.
We are the executors and the house is full. Where do we start?
With the valuation, before anything moves at all. Household contents form part of the estate and have to be valued while they are still in place, and a room that has been emptied cannot be put back together to be looked at. Photograph every room, the cellar included, first. Then let anyone entitled to a keepsake take one, because that chance disappears with the contents as well. The clearance is booked after both, not before.
Do you cover the whole of Carrington?
Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does house clearance cost in Carrington?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the volume going out, the access to it, and how much of the load has to be paid in at a tip rather than resold. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start house clearance in Carrington?
Usually within a week once we have seen photographs of the rooms, the stairs and the parking. Streets inside the old grid are short, narrow and parked both sides with no drives at all, so we stop where it is legal and carry in, and we group Carrington with Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields on the rota.
