Gutter Cleaning for Strelley homes
Short terraces share one unbroken run across several houses with an outlet at each end, so the blockage is rarely above the house that reports it. Cottage guttering is cast iron, bolted and puttied at every joint.
The terraces are the thing to understand before booking. A short block shares one unbroken gutter from end to end, with an outlet at either end and nothing in between, so water off your roof can be travelling past two neighbours before it finds a downpipe. A mat forming over their length puts water over the front lip of yours, which is why the house reporting the overflow is very often not the house with the blockage in it. We clear and film the whole run where the neighbours agree to it, and where they do not we do your length and show you where it goes tight. The semis are simpler. The village is a different job again: cast iron on the cottages, a steeper clay tiled pitch above it, and mature trees along the lane.
Strelley sits in NG8, under Nottingham City Council. On the practical side: The estate half is easy: wide roads, verges, garage courts behind the terraces and off-street space at many properties. The village half is the opposite, with narrow lanes, no footway in places, and nowhere to park outside a cottage without blocking a gateway.
What we run into on Strelley gutter cleaning jobs
What comes out of a cast iron gutter looks nothing like what comes out of a plastic one. The inside of an old iron run was painted or bitumen coated, and once that has failed the metal rusts under standing water, so the vacuum lifts an ochre silt with flakes of scale in it rather than the dark leaf mould people expect. The joints are why nothing is levered or scooped: each length is bolted to the next with putty in the seam, and a brittle joint will crack and weep if a tool is worked against it. Everything leaves through the hose, and the camera goes along the run so you see the joints as well as the channel.
How a Strelley gutter cleaning job actually runs
Where we can stand is the whole of the planning on this one. On the estate the front elevation is straightforward and the back is reached from the garage court, so a car left across the court entrance costs us the rear run of several houses at once, and it is worth a note through a door beforehand rather than a wasted visit on the day. The pole wants a couple of metres of clear ground and a firm footing, which the courts give and the borders do not. On the village side the lane has no footway in places, so the van has to sit where it neither blocks the road nor stands under the run being worked, and planting and hedging beneath the eaves changes where the head can be brought in at all. Late autumn is the sensible date for the cottages, once the trees along the lane are actually bare, because doing it in September buys you about ten weeks. On the estate the timing matters less and the fall of the run matters more. Tell us about dogs in the garden and gates that bolt from the inside when you book, not on the morning.
Who books it here
Two settlements with a dual carriageway between them. The estate side is uniform, with modern fittings and predictable rooms. Over the A6002 the village is a conservation area of listed cottages, a hall and a church, where the products get agreed before anyone starts rather than chosen on the day.
We run Strelley on the same round as Bilborough, Aspley and Wollaton.
What we check on every Strelley job
The downpipe is where most of these jobs actually finish. On the estate the stack discharges into a small gully at the foot of the rear wall, set into the concrete path, and that grid is where the moss coming off the roof ends up whenever somebody has cleared a gutter by pushing it along the run. A packed gully backs the pipe up, the pipe backs the gutter up, and the whole thing overflows again inside a fortnight while everybody blames the clearing. So outlets are done first, water goes down each pipe with somebody watching the shoe at the bottom, and the gully is cleared of what came out of your gutter. On the terraces the stack frequently sits on the party line between two houses, which means neither owner has ever thought of it as theirs. We film it either way, so there is something to show a neighbour rather than a conversation about whose it is.
What the gutter cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Clearing: Hopper heads emptied where a run drains into one
- Clearing: Vacuumed from ground level on a carbon fibre pole, up to three storeys
- Washing and extras: Tiger striping on the gutter face treated with detergent and dwell time rather than pressure
- The camera: Defects recorded as we find them: standing water, a split joint, a bracket letting go
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full gutter cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What gutter cleaning costs in Strelley
Gutter clearing by ground based vacuum, at typical UK market rates by property type. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£70 to £120
Typical per visit in Strelley. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per visit |
|---|---|
| Bungalow or single storey | £45 to £75 |
| Terraced house | £55 to £90 |
| Semi-detached | £70 to £120 |
| Detached | £100 to £180 |
| Three storey or townhouse | £140 to £220 |
| Priced by the metre instead | £4 to £12 per metre |
Gutters are quoted per visit, so a semi-detached cleared twice a year sits at roughly £140 to £240 a year. If a quote looks high against that, ask for the per metre rate instead: it shows whether the price was worked out from your actual run of guttering or from a glance at the front of the house.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Conservatory gutter added to a visit | £30 to £50 |
| Downpipe unblocked, per pipe | £20 to £60 |
| External gutter wash, fascias and soffits | £40 to £80 |
| Gutter guards supplied and fitted, by others | £200 to £500 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Do the neighbours have to book at the same time as us?
It is cheaper and it works better when they do, since the pole is already up and the run is continuous. It is not a condition of the work. Where one house books alone we clear that length and film both ends of it, and if the mat is sitting over next door we tell you and give you something to show them. A cleared length draining into a packed one behaves exactly as it did before.
Will a cast iron gutter be damaged by the vacuum?
No, because nothing touches it beyond suction and a soft head. What damages cast iron is scooping, levering and a ladder leant against the front edge, all of which load a bracket and a putty joint that are a great deal older than the house's plumbing. If we find a joint already weeping, a bracket letting go or a run that has lost its fall, that is a roofer's work, and we film it for you instead of quoting for it.
The pole has to be used from the garage court. Is that a problem?
It is your neighbours' access as much as yours, so we treat it that way. The van is not left across the court, hose runs are kept tight to one side, and the work on any one elevation takes under an hour. If a court is gated, or a resident is known to be particular about it, tell us at the booking. Standing on ground nobody minds us standing on is the difference between a booked visit and an argument on a Tuesday morning.
How would we know the rear gutter was blocked in the first place?
Because you see inside it. The camera travels along every run before anything is touched, and along the same run again once it is empty, and both go to you the same day. That is the point of the method on a house whose rear elevation faces a court and which nobody has looked down on in years. Without footage, a gutter clean is the one job on a house you are taking entirely on trust.
Do you cover the whole of Strelley?
Yes, all of NG8 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does gutter cleaning cost in Strelley?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of storeys, the length of the run rather than the house type, and whether the downpipes are blocked as well. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start gutter cleaning in Strelley?
Within a week or two, longer through October and November when everything comes down at once. The estate half is easy: wide roads, verges, garage courts behind the terraces and off-street space at many properties, and we group Strelley with Bilborough, Aspley and Wollaton on the rota.
