Oven Cleaning for Eastwood homes

Three kinds of cooker in one small town: a slot-in with the grill at eye level in the terraces, a range in the knocked through semis above, a built under double in the newer closes. The eye level grill is the part nobody has opened.

What we are asked to clean divides along the same lines the housing does. In the terraces it is usually a slot-in freestanding cooker, and often an older one with the grill in a compartment at eye level above the hob rather than inside the oven, which is a part most households have never had out. The interwar and postwar semis on the higher ground have frequently been knocked through into a kitchen diner and refitted with a range, ninety centimetres or wider, with two cavities behind one wide door. The closes toward Newthorpe and Giltbrook run to a built under double in a tall housing. Three appliances, three different amounts of dismantling, so it saves everybody a conversation on the doorstep if you say which you have when you book.

Eastwood sits in NG16, under Broxtowe Borough Council. The housing here is mostly nineteenth century brick terraces in long rows stepped down the slope, interwar and postwar semis on the higher ground, and newer closes filling former works land toward Newthorpe and Giltbrook, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Eastwood oven cleaning jobs

The eye level grill is where the neglect collects, for the simple reason that it sits above the worktop and nobody looks up into it. The roof of that compartment takes splatter thrown up off the hob underneath as well as fat from whatever has been grilled in it, and because the compartment is shallow and open at the front it never gets hot enough for long enough to carbonise evenly. What you find is a soft brown film that smears over a hard black one that will not move, and the two want different treatment and different dwell times. The pan runners and the strip of fascia immediately above the opening carry the same thing.

How an Eastwood oven cleaning job actually runs

Two practical things shape an oven visit here and neither of them is the appliance. The first is ventilation. These kitchens are small, most of them are the back addition with one window over the sink and a door out to the yard, and the products that turn baked fat back into something water will carry are caustic whatever a tin says about fumes. Through the summer both openings stand open and it is a non issue. Between November and February we still want them open for the working part of the visit, so it is worth having the heating on elsewhere in the house and the kitchen door shut rather than trying to do the job sealed up. The second is the hood over the hob. A good number of these kitchens vent nowhere, because a recirculating hood was the easy answer when the kitchen went in, and a recirculating hood works through a charcoal filter that gets replaced rather than washed. We take out the metal mesh and degrease that, then tell you which sort sits behind it and whether it is one you buy.

Who books it here

On the practical side: Streets off the main road are narrow and parked both sides, and there is nowhere to stop on the road itself, so we park off it and walk in. On the let properties we work from a key safe rather than meeting anyone.

We run Eastwood on the same round as Kimberley, Nuthall and Hucknall.

What we check on every Eastwood job

In the newer closes the oven is built in under a worktop, and the part that surprises people is at floor level. A built under oven cools itself by drawing air in low and pushing it out through a slot behind or above the plinth, so everything the kitchen puts into the air at that height gets pulled through the cabinet with it: fat vapour, flour, crumbs, pet hair. It sets on the underside of the appliance and on the inside faces of the housing, where no cloth has ever been, and it is warm and greasy rather than dry and dusty. It also answers a question we are asked a lot, which is why a kitchen smells of last week's cooking every time the oven is switched on. The plinth unclips, the housing gets vacuumed and degreased, and the smell leaves with it.

What the oven cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • How the job is left: Freestanding cookers pulled out where safe, so the sides and the gap are done
  • The oven itself: Fan cover and back plate removed where the model allows, and the housing behind it degreased
  • The oven itself: Rinsed repeatedly, so nothing smokes the first time you use it
  • Hobs, extractors and microwaves, each priced as its own item: Charcoal filters checked and reported, since those are replaced rather than cleaned

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full oven cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What oven cleaning costs in Eastwood

Oven cleaning is priced per appliance rather than by the hour. Published Nottingham lists sit in the lower half of every range here. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£45 to £80

Typical per appliance in Eastwood. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per appliance
Single oven£45 to £80
Double oven, or oven and separate grill£70 to £110
Range cooker, 90cm to 110cm£80 to £130
Aga or heat storage cooker£100 to £200
Hob, gas or ceramic£10 to £30
Extractor hood£15 to £30

The single oven price is rarely the whole quote. An oven, the hob and the extractor hood together come to roughly £70 to £140, because the second and third items add cleaning time but not another journey. Booking them separately across three visits costs noticeably more than booking them together.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Microwave£15 to £30
Extra grill pan or set of racks£5 to £10
Heavy soiling, an oven left for years£20 to £30 on top
Several appliances in one visitUsually £10 to £20 off, or the smallest item included

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Ours has the grill above the hob rather than inside the oven. Does that count as extra?

It is its own item, in the same way a hob or an extractor is, because it comes apart and soaks separately. It is also usually the part that makes the biggest visible difference, since it sits at eye level and anybody standing at that worktop is looking straight into it. Say it is there when you book. An older cooker of that pattern takes longer than a modern one with the grill in the top cavity.

The kitchen is the back addition and there is barely room to open the oven door.

That is the usual shape here, and it changes the order of work rather than the price. A dropped oven door takes up most of the floor in a room that width, and in many of these kitchens it lands in the same square metre as the door out to the yard. So we settle first which of the two has to stay usable, put protection down, and take racks and runners away to soak rather than filling the only sink and drainer you have.

We are both out all day. Can it be done with nobody in?

Yes, and it suits the job. An oven has to be stone cold before anything is applied, so a visit that starts mid morning in a house nobody has cooked in since the previous evening is ideal. We work from a key safe where there is one. What we need agreed in advance is the ventilation, since a sealed kitchen is the one thing that makes this unpleasant, and confirmation that there is nothing due to come out of that oven the moment you get home.

We have a range in a knocked through kitchen. Is that just a bigger version?

It is a longer job rather than a bigger one, and the difference is in the parts. A range carries two cavities with their own racks and runners, a much wider area of door glass, and cast iron pan supports that soak rather than wipe. The smaller cavity is usually the one being used as a cupboard, which means its racks are furred with fat that arrived as vapour rather than from cooking. Allow most of a working day and clear the worktop either side beforehand.

Do you cover the whole of Eastwood?

Yes, all of NG16 and the surrounding streets, under Broxtowe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does oven cleaning cost in Eastwood?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of appliances rather than the hours, whether it is a single, double or range, and how long it has been since the last one. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start oven cleaning in Eastwood?

Usually within a few days, because it is a one visit job that does not need a rota slot building around it. Streets off the main road are narrow and parked both sides, and there is nowhere to stop on the road itself, so we park off it and walk in, and we group Eastwood with Kimberley, Nuthall and Hucknall on the rota.
