Can the stone fireplace surround in the lounge be cleaned?
Yes, and carefully. Reconstituted stone of that period is porous and almost never sealed, so an acidic cleaner etches it and bleach leaves a pale patch you cannot blend away afterwards. It gets brushed dry first, because the face is full of shallow ledges holding dust, then cleaned with a pH neutral solution on a cloth rather than flooded with water. Soot marking around the opening usually lightens rather than clears, and we will say which yours is before starting.
