Gutter Cleaning for Sherwood homes

Mature limes and sycamores line the streets here, so the autumn fill is leaf rather than moss. The awkward run is the main rear gutter above the back addition roof, which nobody can stand on to reach it.

What fills a gutter here is tree litter rather than roof moss. The streets running off Mansfield Road carry mature limes and sycamores at the kerb, the ground toward Woodthorpe Grange Park puts a good deal more canopy behind the houses, and by the end of November the front runs hold leaf that has gone to a wet mat instead of sitting loose. That argues for two visits, one after the drop and one in late spring once the limes have finished shedding bud casings and seed onto the same run. Height is not the constraint on two storeys. The rear geometry is, because the main gutter at the back runs above the roof of the back addition.

Sherwood sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. On the practical side: On-street parking on the roads off Mansfield Road, generally fine outside the evening rush.

What we run into on Sherwood gutter cleaning jobs

The junction where the back addition meets the main roof is where these houses actually fail. There is a short valley at that point, a length of gutter set below the main slope and a hopper head taking the water down, and everything off both roof planes funnels into one place. It packs solid, and because it sits over the kitchen rather than over an outside wall, an overflow runs down the internal angle of the brickwork and appears as a damp patch inside. It is also the hardest thing on the house to see from the ground, which is the argument for putting the camera up before deciding anything.

How a Sherwood gutter cleaning job actually runs

Access here is better than it looks from the front. Most of the semis were built in pairs with a passage down the side of the joint, gated at the pavement, and that is wide enough to walk a vacuum and a pole set through to the back garden without anything going through the house. Where a row is a true terrace instead, the way to the rear is the entry between two houses, and that gate is the thing to check before the day rather than on it. Ground matters as much as reach. These gardens are on a slope and most of them are lawn, so after a wet week the machine wants boards under it and the pole is worked off the path rather than off soft turf. Timing follows the trees: late November once the limes and sycamores at the kerb have finished, and a second look in June, is the pattern that suits the street. We will not hold a booking in high wind and we will move the day if it is wrong, because a carbon pole at full extension in a gust is not something to be stubborn about.

Who books it here

High ceilings, picture rails and coving, which means the high level dusting in a deep clean genuinely needs a step ladder and time allocated to it.

We run Sherwood on the same round as Mapperley, Arnold and New Basford.

What we check on every Sherwood job

What the camera finds on the front is a different material from the back. The front run takes the kerb trees, so it is leaf: whole lime leaves matted flat, layered and rotted down at the outlet into something closer to compost than to litter, with seedlings actually growing in it by spring on a run that has been left a few years. The back run takes the roof instead, so it is grit off old plain tiles and moss lifted from the shaded slope, and it behaves like wet sand. The two need different handling. Leaf lifts in one piece if the head is fed under it rather than driven into the middle of it, while silt has to be taken in short sections because it simply flows back along a level run. The hopper at the back addition is checked on its own, since a blocked hopper reads as a clear gutter from the ground.

What the gutter cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Clearing: Conservatory and lean-to gutters where they are reachable from the ground
  • Clearing: Outlets, corners and stop ends, which is where the mat forms first
  • Washing and extras: Existing gutter guards lifted, cleared underneath and refitted
  • Washing and extras: External gutter wash, meaning the outside faces of the gutter and the downpipes

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full gutter cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What gutter cleaning costs in Sherwood

Gutter clearing by ground based vacuum, at typical UK market rates by property type. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£70 to £120

Typical per visit in Sherwood. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per visit
Bungalow or single storey£45 to £75
Terraced house£55 to £90
Semi-detached£70 to £120
Detached£100 to £180
Three storey or townhouse£140 to £220
Priced by the metre instead£4 to £12 per metre

Gutters are quoted per visit, so a semi-detached cleared twice a year sits at roughly £140 to £240 a year. If a quote looks high against that, ask for the per metre rate instead: it shows whether the price was worked out from your actual run of guttering or from a glance at the front of the house.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Conservatory gutter added to a visit£30 to £50
Downpipe unblocked, per pipe£20 to £60
External gutter wash, fascias and soffits£40 to £80
Gutter guards supplied and fitted, by others£200 to £500

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

How often should we have them cleared with the trees on this street?

Twice a year is the honest answer on a road with mature limes: once the leaf is down in late November, and again in early summer. A single autumn visit leaves the spring drop sitting in the run through the wettest months. Where a house stands away from the kerb trees and only takes what comes off its own roof, one visit carries it, and we will tell you which of those you have after the first look.

Can you reach the back gutter over the extension roof?

From the ground with the pole, yes, in almost every case, and that is the point of working this way. The back addition roof cannot be stood on and we will not try, so the run above it is reached at an angle from the garden with the camera showing what the head is doing. Where a pole genuinely cannot get square to a section, we film it and tell you rather than guess.

We have gutter guards on the front already. Do we still need this?

Usually yes, and often sooner rather than later. Mesh and brush guards stop a leaf falling in and then hold it on top instead, so on a street with mature limes the guard becomes the mat and the water runs over the front edge of it. We can clear the top of a guard and lift sections where they come out, but we do not supply or fit them, and on a road like this they are not the saving people expect.

There is a nest under the eaves. Does that stop the job?

It stops that section of it. An active nest is protected while it is in use or being built, so we will not disturb it. We clear the rest of the run and come back for that length later in the year. What we will do is show you on camera where the material is coming from, because a nest above a gutter keeps refilling it, and the fix is usually a repair to the fascia or the tile line once the birds have gone.

Do you cover the whole of Sherwood?

Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Sherwood?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of storeys, the length of the run rather than the house type, and whether the downpipes are blocked as well. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start gutter cleaning in Sherwood?

Within a week or two, longer through October and November when everything comes down at once. On-street parking on the roads off Mansfield Road, generally fine outside the evening rush, and we group Sherwood with Mapperley, Arnold and New Basford on the rota.
