Gutter Cleaning for Wilford homes
Cast iron on the older village roofs, deep sections bolted at every joint and holding a heavier mat than plastic does. What comes out is moss off the shaded rear slopes and lime bracts, and the pole goes up on ground that stays soft.
Two roof generations and two different gutters. The older village properties carry cast iron, deep ogee or half round, bolted at every joint and set to a fall decided a very long time ago, and they hold a heavier mat of debris than a plastic run of the same length. The closes and semis behind have uPVC on hipped roofs, shallower, lighter and easier to read on a camera. Height is not the difficulty, since almost everything here is two storey with low eaves and reachable from the ground. What decides the job is where a person can stand to raise a pole, on ground that stays soft for most of the year and in gardens that run long and planted.
Wilford sits in NG11, under Nottingham City Council. On the practical side: Main Road narrows through the village and the roadside spaces by the green fill early, so we work from the side streets and carry in. Newer closes have drives. Tell us if the only way to the back is a shared entry.
What we run into on Wilford gutter cleaning jobs
What comes out is seasonal and local. Through autumn the limes on the old road drop bracts and small hard nutlets, and those pack into an outlet in a way that leaf litter does not, because they hold their shape instead of matting flat. The rest of the year it is moss off the shaded rear slopes, and wet moss is heavy enough that one length of gutter fills more of the machine than a whole tree of leaves. On the cast iron runs the camera usually finds standing water somewhere along the back, sitting in a low spot between two brackets rather than anywhere near the outlet.
How a Wilford gutter cleaning job actually runs
Gutters here get booked in autumn and then left for two years, which is the wrong way round on roofs surrounded by mature trees. We would rather put the second visit in the diary at the time of the first, late in autumn once the limes have finished, than be called out when a bedroom wall goes dark. On the day what we need is a route to the back of the house and firm standing. Long gardens running down toward the grass are common here, and the bottom of one holds water into the spring, so the machine stands on the hard area near the house and the pole reaches from there. Where the only way through is the house itself, that becomes an appointment rather than a slot in a round, and it gets booked differently. Tell us if a garden gate is bolted from the inside, if a dog is out, and whether anything glazed sits under the run being cleared. Nesting is the other one: between spring and midsummer an active nest in a gutter or a hopper stays where it is and the rest of the run gets done around it.
Who books it here
Everything sits low against the river, so damp behaves differently. North facing render and window frames grow a green film, ground floors on the old lanes are cold underfoot in summer, and condensation on the reveals starts earlier in autumn than it does uphill.
We run Wilford on the same round as The Meadows, Clifton and West Bridgford.
What we check on every Wilford job
The tell on the ground is the wall rather than the gutter. Where a run has been overflowing at a joint, the brick or render below it carries a vertical green stripe that is wider at the bottom than the top, and on cast iron that stripe usually lines up with a bolted joint rather than with the outlet. Worth knowing before anybody clears anything, because clearing it does not mend a joint. The second is the shoe at the foot of the downpipe. On these houses it often discharges onto a paved area rather than into a gully, so when the run above has been blocked the debris ends up in a heap at the bottom of the pipe, and the state of that heap tells you what has been coming down and roughly for how long. We clear the shoe as part of the job and flush the pipe through afterwards to prove it runs.
What the gutter cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- The camera: Defects recorded as we find them: standing water, a split joint, a bracket letting go
- The camera: A look along every run before anything starts, so you know what is actually in there
- Clearing: Debris bagged and taken away, not tipped into the border
- Clearing: Outlets, corners and stop ends, which is where the mat forms first
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full gutter cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Wilford property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.
What gutter cleaning costs in Wilford
Gutter clearing by ground based vacuum, at typical UK market rates by property type. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£70 to £120
Typical per visit in Wilford. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per visit |
|---|---|
| Bungalow or single storey | £45 to £75 |
| Terraced house | £55 to £90 |
| Semi-detached | £70 to £120 |
| Detached | £100 to £180 |
| Three storey or townhouse | £140 to £220 |
| Priced by the metre instead | £4 to £12 per metre |
Gutters are quoted per visit, so a semi-detached cleared twice a year sits at roughly £140 to £240 a year. If a quote looks high against that, ask for the per metre rate instead: it shows whether the price was worked out from your actual run of guttering or from a glance at the front of the house.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Conservatory gutter added to a visit | £30 to £50 |
| Downpipe unblocked, per pipe | £20 to £60 |
| External gutter wash, fascias and soffits | £40 to £80 |
| Gutter guards supplied and fitted, by others | £200 to £500 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Ours are cast iron. Does that change what you can do?
It changes how they are handled rather than whether they get cleared. Cast iron sections are bolted together with a sealed joint, and levering at a blockage puts the load into that joint rather than into the debris. So it comes out by vacuum and by hand, not by force. If a joint is already weeping, or a bracket has pulled out of the fascia, we film it and tell you, because that is a roofer's job and not ours.
The lean to at the back has its own gutter. Can you reach it?
Usually, from the ground, and that is the only way it happens. Nobody stands on lean to or conservatory glazing, whatever it looks like it would take, because those sheets are not a working platform and the failure is sudden. The lower run at the back is normally the one that has filled, since it takes what washes off the main roof as well as its own, and it discharges over a path.
How do we know it has actually been cleared if we are not there?
You get the footage. A camera on the pole head looks along every run before we start and again once it is clear, and the stills or the clips come to you the same day. That is the entire point of it, since gutters are the one job on a house that nobody can check from the ground. Anything we could not clear gets filmed rather than described, so you are looking at the actual joint or bracket instead of at our account of it.
Do the fascias and soffits need doing at the same time?
Not necessarily, but it is the sensible moment to decide, since the pole is already up there. Fascias and soffits are washed down as a separate item, quoted per elevation or for the whole property. On the shaded elevations here they carry noticeably more growth than the sunny sides, so doing half a house looks like doing half a house. The tiger striping down the front face of a gutter is a detergent and dwell time job rather than a pressure one.
Do you cover the whole of Wilford?
Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does gutter cleaning cost in Wilford?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of storeys, the length of the run rather than the house type, and whether the downpipes are blocked as well. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start gutter cleaning in Wilford?
Within a week or two, longer through October and November when everything comes down at once. Main Road narrows through the village and the roadside spaces by the green fill early, so we work from the side streets and carry in, and we group Wilford with The Meadows, Clifton and West Bridgford on the rota.
