Limescale is calcium carbonate left behind when hard water evaporates. It is not dirt, which is why detergent does nothing to it. It dissolves in acid, which is why descalers, vinegar and citric acid work and why bleach and washing-up liquid do not.
That single fact explains most of the frustration people have with bathroom cleaning. If you have been scrubbing a shower screen with a general purpose spray and wondering why the film never lifts, you have been using the wrong category of product, not too little effort.
Why some homes get it far worse
Water hardness in the UK varies enormously by region. Much of the south and east of England, including London, the Thames Valley, East Anglia and parts of the Midlands, sits on chalk and limestone and has hard or very hard water. Much of Scotland, Wales, the north west and the south west has soft water.
In a very hard water area, a shower screen develops a visible film within two or three weeks. In a soft water area the same screen looks fine after six months.
You can check your hardness on your water supplier's website, usually by postcode. It is worth knowing, because it determines how often descaling needs to happen and whether a water softener would be worth the investment.
What actually removes it
Acid, and time. The main options:

The common mistake is applying and immediately wiping. Acid needs contact time, usually five to fifteen minutes and sometimes longer, to dissolve the deposit. Spray, leave, then wipe with almost no pressure.
If you find yourself scrubbing hard, the product has not had long enough. Reapply and wait rather than pressing harder, which just scratches the surface and creates a rougher texture that holds future scale.
Tackling each surface
Taps
Wrap a cloth soaked in descaler around the spout and secure it with an elastic band, or fill a small food bag with descaler and tie it over the tap so the spout sits submerged. Leave for fifteen minutes to an hour depending on severity.
Then a soft brush around the base and the join where the tap meets the basin, which is where scale is thickest and least visible. Rinse thoroughly and buff dry.
Shower head
Unscrew it if you can and soak it fully in a bowl. If it does not come off, the bag-and-elastic-band method works. Overnight for a badly blocked head.
Afterwards, poke each nozzle with a cocktail stick and run it hot for a minute to flush loosened debris. Rubber-nozzled heads can often be cleared by rubbing a thumb across them.
Shower screen
The worst offender, because the whole surface is affected and it is the most visible thing in the room.
Apply descaler over the whole panel, leave it, then use a soft pad rather than anything abrasive. Squeegee, then buff dry with a microfibre.
If the screen still looks cloudy after a proper descale, the glass may be etched. Prolonged hard water contact permanently pits the surface, and no cleaning will fix that. Glass restoration polish sometimes helps; replacement is the reliable answer. This is why prevention matters more than cure on shower screens.
Tiles and grout
Descaler on the tiles, a stiff brush on the grout. Work in sections and rinse as you go.
Grout that stays dark after cleaning is either stained through or mouldy inside, and neither responds to more scrubbing. Mouldy silicone sealant is best cut out and replaced, which is a thirty minute job with a sealant gun and a craft knife, and it transforms how a bathroom looks more than any amount of cleaning.
Toilet
Scale forms at the waterline and under the rim. Push the water level down first with a brush so the acid contacts the scale rather than being diluted.
Then descaler, left for as long as you can manage, ideally overnight. A pumice stick made for the purpose handles stubborn rings without scratching the glaze, though test gently first.
Basin and bath
Usually straightforward. Descaler, dwell, rinse. Pay attention to the overflow hole and the plughole surround, which are the places that get missed.
What not to do
- Never use acid descalers on natural stone. Marble, limestone and travertine are calcium carbonate themselves, so acid dissolves them, leaving permanent dull etched patches. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner instead.
- Never mix descaler with bleach. Acid plus hypochlorite releases chlorine gas. This is a genuine hazard that causes hospital admissions every year, not a theoretical one.
- Never use abrasive pads on chrome or glass. They leave micro-scratches that hold future scale, making the problem permanently worse and the surface progressively harder to clean.
- Do not leave strong descaler on plated fittings for hours. Cheap plating can lift. Fifteen minutes, then check, then repeat if needed.
- Do not use descaler on a hot surface, which makes it evaporate before it works and produces stronger fumes.
- Avoid acid on aluminium and some enamel, which it can dull.
Stopping it coming back
This is where the real gain is, because prevention takes seconds and removal takes an hour.
Squeegee the shower screen after use. The single most effective habit available. It takes about fifteen seconds and prevents essentially all screen scale. A squeegee costs a few pounds and will save you more time than any product you can buy.
Leave the extractor running for ten minutes after showering, or open the window. Drier surfaces mean less evaporation and less deposit, and it also controls mould.
Dry the taps with the towel you have just used. Two seconds, and the difference over a month is obvious.
Descale monthly rather than annually. A monthly ten minute pass in a hard water area is genuinely easier than an annual two hour battle, and it prevents the etching that eventually forces replacement.
Consider a shower head filter, which is inexpensive, or a water softener, which is a meaningful investment but changes the maintenance burden of an entire house rather than just the bathroom. In a very hard area, softeners also extend the life of boilers, washing machines and dishwashers, which is usually where the payback actually comes from.

If you are booking a deep clean, mention that you are in a hard water area when you get the quote. Descaling is time-consuming, and a quote based on a soft water assumption will not have enough hours in it, which leads to a rushed job and mutual disappointment.
Frequently asked questions
Does vinegar work as well as a proper descaler? For light film, yes, and it is far cheaper. For heavy build-up in a very hard water area, no. Use vinegar for maintenance and a proprietary product for the annual reset.
Why does my shower screen stay cloudy after cleaning? Either the descaler had insufficient contact time, or the glass is etched. Try a second, longer application first. If it does not change, it is etching, which is permanent.
Can limescale damage my plumbing? Yes. It builds inside pipes, boilers and appliance heating elements, reducing efficiency and eventually causing failures. This is the main financial argument for a softener in a very hard area.
Is a water softener worth it? In a very hard water area, often yes, though the payback comes from appliance and boiler life more than from easier cleaning. Note that softened water is not usually recommended for drinking, so a separate hard tap is normally fitted.
What about limescale on a glass shower door with a coating? Many modern screens have a hydrophobic coating. Strong acids and abrasives destroy it. Check the manufacturer's guidance and use the mildest thing that works.
