Gutter Cleaning for Hucknall homes
What comes out of a gutter here depends on the age of the roof. The plots toward the bypass give up roofing grit and bedding sand with no leaf in them, while the older streets near Titchfield Park fill with moss and leaf litter.
What is actually in the gutter here tells you the age of the roof under it. On the plots toward the bypass there is no leaf at all, because nothing planted since the estate went up is tall enough to drop into a gutter yet. What comes out instead is the mineral grit that sheds off new tiles, sand from the bedding at the ridge and the verge, and the odd offcut of felt or plastic banding left behind at handover. The older streets near the centre and around Titchfield Park are the opposite, and the bulk of it is moss washed down off north facing pitches with leaf litter packed into it.
Hucknall sits in NG15, under Ashfield District Council. On the practical side: Good, and reachable on the same tram line that runs past our base.
What we run into on Hucknall gutter cleaning jobs
The downpipes are worth looking at separately. On the newer plots the pipe drops straight into a sealed connection at ground level with no open gully and no shoe, so there is nothing visible to check and a blockage announces itself as water tracking down the render instead. We rod and then flush to prove flow rather than assuming it. On the older houses the pipe discharges over an open gully, which fills with the silt the gutter has been feeding it for years, and clearing the run without clearing that grating simply moves the problem a few feet down.
How a Hucknall gutter cleaning job actually runs
Everything is done from the ground on a carbon fibre pole with a vacuum head, which means the pole needs somewhere to stand and room to be raised. On the newer plots that is straightforward at the front unless a car is sitting under the run, so we ask for it to be moved for the hour rather than working over a bonnet. The town centre terraces are the awkward ones, because the front elevation sits on the footway and the pole has to be raised from a public pavement with people passing under it. That gets coned and worked in short sections, and it is a reason we prefer a weekday morning there rather than a Saturday. Reaching the rear of those houses is the other question, and where there is no route through to the back the job has to be booked for a day somebody is in. Three storey plots on the newer developments are within pole reach but slower, since the head is being steered by camera at that height rather than by eye. Frost and strong wind stop the work rather than delaying it by an hour.
Who books it here
The northern end of our area, reached on the same tram line we live on. Regular domestic work and a good deal of after builders cleaning on the newer estates.
We run Hucknall on the same round as Bulwell, Arnold and New Basford.
What we check on every Hucknall job
The camera goes along the run before anything starts, so the fill is seen rather than guessed at, and the same pass is repeated afterwards. The outlets are where the mat forms first, because the fall is shallowest there and everything migrating along the run stops at the hole. Corners and stop ends are next. On the older houses the eaves are open enough for birds to get in above the fascia, and nesting material dropped into the gutter behind them is a common find, though an active nest is left entirely alone whatever the season. Union clips are the item to look at while the run is empty, since a joint that has dropped shows as a line of silt sitting still on one side of it. Anything we cannot clear is filmed and shown to you as it is, because a run that has lost its fall is a guttering job and no amount of vacuuming fixes it.
What the gutter cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Washing and extras: Tiger striping on the gutter face treated with detergent and dwell time rather than pressure
- Washing and extras: Fascias and soffits washed down, quoted per elevation or as a whole property
- Washing and extras: External gutter wash, meaning the outside faces of the gutter and the downpipes
- The camera: Worth having if you are a landlord, or simply not at the property that day
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full gutter cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What gutter cleaning costs in Hucknall
Gutter clearing by ground based vacuum, at typical UK market rates by property type. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£70 to £120
Typical per visit in Hucknall. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per visit |
|---|---|
| Bungalow or single storey | £45 to £75 |
| Terraced house | £55 to £90 |
| Semi-detached | £70 to £120 |
| Detached | £100 to £180 |
| Three storey or townhouse | £140 to £220 |
| Priced by the metre instead | £4 to £12 per metre |
Gutters are quoted per visit, so a semi-detached cleared twice a year sits at roughly £140 to £240 a year. If a quote looks high against that, ask for the per metre rate instead: it shows whether the price was worked out from your actual run of guttering or from a glance at the front of the house.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Conservatory gutter added to a visit | £30 to £50 |
| Downpipe unblocked, per pipe | £20 to £60 |
| External gutter wash, fascias and soffits | £40 to £80 |
| Gutter guards supplied and fitted, by others | £200 to £500 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
The estate is only a few years old. Do the gutters need doing already?
Yes, and usually sooner than people expect. A new roof sheds loose grit and bedding sand heavily in its first years, and that silt settles at the outlets where the fall is shallowest. There are no trees to blame, so nobody looks. The camera pass is the cheap part of the visit and it tells you whether the run needs clearing now or can wait until autumn.
There is moss all over the roof. Will clearing the gutter stop it coming back?
No. Moss on the tiles keeps shedding into the gutter every time it rains hard, so a house with a mossy north pitch needs the run cleared more often rather than once. We clear what has arrived and film what is left on the roof so you can see the source. Removing moss from the roof itself is roofing work, and scraping tiles from a pole does more harm than good.
The back of our terrace has no side access. Can you still do it?
Yes, but the day has to suit you rather than the round. Without a side passage the only way through to the rear with a pole and a vacuum is the house itself, so we book those for a time somebody is home, run mats along the route and carry the kit through rather than dragging it. It takes longer than a front only visit and we quote it that way rather than adding it on the day.
There is a car on the drive most of the day. Does it matter?
It does under the front run, because the pole is raised directly above it and debris comes out of the gutter as it is cleared. We would rather you moved it for the hour than covered it. On the estates a car on the drive also takes the only flat standing we have for the vacuum drum, and working off a sloping lawn with a pole extended is not something we do.
Do you cover the whole of Hucknall?
Yes, all of NG15 and the surrounding streets, under Ashfield District Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does gutter cleaning cost in Hucknall?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of storeys, the length of the run rather than the house type, and whether the downpipes are blocked as well. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start gutter cleaning in Hucknall?
Within a week or two, longer through October and November when everything comes down at once. Good, and reachable on the same tram line that runs past our base, and we group Hucknall with Bulwell, Arnold and New Basford on the rota.
